How to find an in-home caregiver in Palo Alto
Post your request with your Palo Alto ZIP code (94301, 94303, 94304 or 94306), the tasks, the schedule and how you want to be kept informed. Caregivers who cover Palo Alto are notified and can apply; local profiles appear above as people join. Housing costs here are steep (median gross rent $3,484, ACS 2020–2024), so expect many applicants to commute from Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Jose or the San Mateo County side, some by Caltrain to the Palo Alto or California Avenue station. Mention parking at the house and how far it is from the nearest station.
If you live out of the area, say so and describe how you want reports: a message when each shift ends, a log book kept in the kitchen, or a weekly call. Chinese is the most common language spoken at home after English in Palo Alto, used by 17.2% of residents five and older, with smaller groups speaking Korean, Slavic languages such as Russian, French or German; name your parent's language if it is not English. Double-check the city as well. East Palo Alto belongs to San Mateo County and sets a different minimum wage, and its county services are separate.

Evaluating caregivers in Palo Alto
Before you meet anyone, decide which credential the job needs. For companionship and household help, a Home Care Aide Registry number shows the person registered with the state and cleared a fingerprint check; for bathing, transfers and post-surgical care, a CDPH-certified nursing assistant brings formal clinical training, and a CNA course is offered at MVLA Adult School on Moffett Boulevard. Someone already providing IHSS care in Santa Clara County went through DOJ fingerprinting to enroll. Phone two past employers and ask how the caregiver handled a fall or a missed medication. Hold interviews where your parent lives and let your parent ask questions too, then book a short paid trial before a longer commitment. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens applicants or checks their records, so that work is yours.

- How long is your commute to Palo Alto, and what time could you reliably arrive?
- Have you cared for a patient just discharged from Stanford Health Care or the VA Palo Alto Medical Center?
- Which credential do you hold: a registry number, a CNA certificate or IHSS enrollment?
- My father attends a day program; could you handle drop-off and pick-up on those days?

- What is your hourly rate, and how do you charge for overnight shifts?
What in-home care costs in Palo Alto: hourly rates and schedules
Typical Palo Alto requests: a few weekday hours for an older adult who lives alone, mornings and evenings for bathing, meals and medication reminders, several full days after a hospital discharge, transport to doctors' visits, and nights at the house once dementia advances. Families who use a day program or the Avenidas center often book home hours around it.

| IHSS provider wage, Santa Clara County | $20.44 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Palo Alto's minimum wage is $18.70 per hour of work performed within city limits, rising to $19.25 on January 1, 2027. The city's page excludes an employer's own parents, spouse, children and domestic partner and covers residential care facilities, but does not otherwise address families who hire at home, so ask its compliance office, (650) 329-2671, if you are unsure. For comparison, the county IHSS wage is $20.44, BLS reports an $18.09 median for aides across the San Jose metro, and agencies statewide bill $40 an hour at the median for non-medical help. Direct-hire pay often falls above the IHSS rate but under agency prices, rising for nights or dementia care. State overtime rules for personal attendants start past nine daily hours or 45 weekly hours, and IRS household-employment taxes apply once you pay a single worker $3,000 in cash during 2026.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
