How to find an in-home caregiver in Mountain View
Mountain View already offers older residents a good deal of daytime support, and a private caregiver usually fills the hours around it. At the Senior Center on Escuela Avenue, the Community Services Agency serves a dine-in lunch (doors open at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 11:45) for a suggested $5 donation from county residents 60 and over. CSA also provides senior case management in person or remotely, and its volunteers sometimes escort homebound seniors to medical appointments. The Senior Center adds free blood pressure checks, HICAP Medicare counseling and free legal appointments. IHSS can pay for authorized hours if your relative is on Medi-Cal. What these do not cover is personal care at home, nights, weekends and the first weeks after a discharge from El Camino Health on Grant Road.
Your post should list the tasks, days, hours and ZIP code, and say whether the caregiver needs a car. Caregivers who can work in Mountain View answer you directly, and the profiles shown above change as people nearby join. 8.1% of Mountain View households have no vehicle, so if your relative is one of them, ask applicants how they will handle errands and appointments. If your relative prefers a language other than English, put it at the top of the post.

Types of in-home care families in Mountain View arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

Evaluating caregivers in Mountain View
Credentials mean different things. Registry status is compulsory for aides who work through a licensed agency and optional for someone you hire privately. Nurse assistant certification shows formal training and a passed state test; locally, MVLA Adult School on Moffett Boulevard runs the course. IHSS enrollment in this county involves a DOJ fingerprint check handled through Public Authority Services. None of it replaces your own diligence: hold the interview in your relative's home with them there, ring two earlier employers, get signed permission and order a screening report, and treat the first paid shift as a trial. CaregiverConnect itself runs no background checks; its Verified badge relates to one reviewed upload.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Have you cared for someone in the first week home from El Camino Health? What did you watch for?
- Could you bring my mother to the Senior Center lunch and home again afterwards?
- We have no car in the household. How would you handle grocery runs and appointments?
- Which languages are you comfortable using with a client?
- Are you a CNA, a registered home care aide, an IHSS provider, or none of these?
- How would you encourage my father to keep walking after his hip surgery without pushing him too hard?
- What do you charge for weekday hours, weekends and an overnight shift?
What in-home care costs in Mountain View: hourly rates and schedules

| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties) | $18.09 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Santa Clara County | $20.44 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
For 2026 the city requires $19.70 an hour from employers that have a Mountain View facility or business license, once a worker spends two hours or more a week on the job in town. The ordinance is written for businesses; for a household employer, the City Manager's Office (650-903-6301) can say how it applies, and paying $19.70 or more settles the matter. That is well above the $16.90 state minimum and the $18.09 metro aide median in the table. County IHSS pays $20.44. Agencies charge more because their fees fund payroll, insurance and supervision. Long-shift personal attendants are owed 1.5 times their rate for any hour past nine in one day, and past 45 in one week, under state law.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
