How to find an in-home caregiver in Union City
Post your request without charge under 94587, describing the tasks, the hours, whether driving is involved and which language your parent prefers. Caregivers who cover your address can apply, and caregiver profiles from around the Tri-City area are added here when people join. Applicants may live in Union City itself or in Fremont, Newark or Hayward; ask how each will travel to you and how they would cope if their usual ride failed.
Be exact about language. ACS 2020–2024 estimates show that in 63.1% of cases a Union City resident aged five or more speaks something other than English at home, and 39.9% of them speaking English less than very well; Spanish is the home language for 13.5% of residents. A parent who understands little English needs a caregiver who can explain medicines and calm them when they are confused. Also say whether your parent lives alone (1,567 Union City residents over 65 did in the survey), uses a walker or wheelchair, or has just come home from Washington Hospital or Kaiser in Fremont.

Evaluating caregivers in Union City
Three credentials are worth asking about. Alameda County IHSS providers have completed Public Authority enrollment, including a state DOJ background check. Home Care Aide Registry status is required only for aides who work for licensed agencies, but some independents list it. A certified nursing assistant holds a CDPH certificate after a state-approved course and exam, and a graduate of the New Haven Adult School caregiver course will have a CPR certificate if they took the in-person day. Confirm each with the issuer, ring two former employers, introduce the applicant to your parent before deciding, obtain signed consent for any background report, and pay for one or two trial shifts. Vetting is your job: CaregiverConnect runs no background checks.

- Would you take my father to lunch and classes at the Ruggieri Center, or arrange a Ride-On Tri-City trip?

What in-home care costs in Union City: hourly rates and schedules
Typical Union City requests: weekday daytime hours while the adults of the household work; a few morning visits a week for bathing and dressing; rides to clinic visits and the Ruggieri Center; overnight help for the first weeks after a discharge; and live-in care for advanced dementia. The Ruggieri Center serves lunch Monday to Thursday only, so if your parent eats there, plan Friday meals separately.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Alameda County | $22.10 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Union City has no wage ordinance, so work in Union City is covered by the state minimum of $16.90 an hour, though caregivers who also work in Fremont or Hayward will know those cities set higher local rates. For comparison, IHSS in Alameda County pays $22.10 an hour (from July 1, 2026), BLS reported a $17.28 metro median for aides in May 2025, and agencies in California charge a $40 median per CareScout. Budget for a private rate above the IHSS level for experienced help and more for dementia care, nights or driving. State overtime rules for personal attendants start after the ninth hour in a day and the 45th in a week. A parent with Medi-Cal can be screened for IHSS on (510) 577-1800; approved hours can pay a caregiver you choose, including a son or daughter.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
