How to find an in-home caregiver in Hayward

Post once, free, with your relative's Hayward ZIP code, the days and hours, and the help needed. Caregivers whose radius reaches your street can apply, and profiles nearby appear above as people join. Applicants are likely to come from Hayward, San Leandro, Union City, Castro Valley or San Lorenzo, so ask each one how they travel and what the commute looks like on a weekday morning.

Name the language in the post. In ACS 2020–2024, a third of Hayward residents aged five and over (32.8%) speak Spanish at home, and 45.5% of those who speak a language other than English report speaking English less than very well. If your mother prays in Tagalog, watches Spanish television or prefers Cantonese at meals, a caregiver who can follow along changes the whole day. Also say whether the home has stairs, whether your father uses a walker, and where he gets care, for example St. Rose Hospital on Calaroga Avenue.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Hayward

Three credentials can be confirmed. An Alameda County IHSS provider has completed Public Authority enrollment and a Department of Justice fingerprint check. Agency staff must be on the state aide registry; for independents a listing is a choice. A CNA certificate comes from CDPH after an approved course and exam. Ask for the number, check it, and phone two earlier employers. Include your relative in the interview, get written consent before any background report, and book a paid trial shift before committing. Screening is yours to do: CaregiverConnect performs no checks of its own.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which neighborhood do you start from, and do you drive or take AC Transit and BART?
  • My mother mostly uses Spanish (or Tagalog). Are you comfortable in it for a full shift?
  • Have you helped someone home from St. Rose Hospital or another nearby hospital? What did you do in the first days?
  • Are you enrolled as an IHSS provider here, certified as a nursing assistant, or listed on the state aide registry?
  • Would you take Dad to lunch at the Hayward Area Senior Center on North Third Street?
  • How would you handle my father getting agitated in the late afternoon?
  • Are you employed by an agency, or do you work for yourself?
  • What are your rates for weekdays, nights and weekends?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Hayward: hourly rates and schedules

Typical Hayward patterns: weekday shifts while everyone else in a large household is at work; mornings only, for bathing, dressing and breakfast; overnight cover for a parent with dementia who wanders; weekend relief for whichever relative carries most of the load; and daily visits for a few weeks after a hospital discharge.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Hayward has two minimum wages. A business with 26 or more employees pays at least $17.79 an hour for work done in the city in 2026, and one with 25 or fewer pays the state $16.90; the city has set $18.39 and $17.40 for 2027. An agency you hire is bound by those floors, nonprofits included. For a caregiver you employ directly, the useful reference points are the county IHSS rate of $22.10, the $17.28 metro aide median from BLS and the $40 CareScout agency median for California; rates for dementia care, overnights or driving usually sit higher. Long shifts matter too: a personal attendant is owed overtime from hour ten of a workday and from hour 46 of a workweek. If your relative is on Medi-Cal, call (510) 577-1800 to ask about IHSS, which can pay a caregiver you pick, a family member included.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
