How to find an in-home caregiver in Santa Clara County
Begin with your relative's ZIP code rather than your own. Caregivers here think in terms of commute: someone in San Jose may happily take a client in Milpitas or Santa Clara, but think twice about a daily drive to Los Altos or Saratoga at rush hour. In the South County, Morgan Hill and Gilroy have their own smaller pool, and in the West Valley, expect many applicants to be coming from elsewhere in the valley. If the address is far from where most caregivers live, offer mileage, a longer block of hours, or a schedule that avoids peak traffic.
Name the language your relative prefers. The 2020–2024 ACS puts the countywide share of non-English households, counted by person from age five, at 55.2%; 81,401 people who speak a Chinese language and 71,820 who speak Vietnamese report speaking English less than very well. The caregiver cards shown above start with whoever lives nearest the ZIP you enter, and the list shifts as new people sign up.

Types of in-home care families in Santa Clara County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Santa Clara County
You can confirm three things. Holding an IHSS provider number proves enrollment was finished with Public Authority Services by Sourcewise, which includes the state orientation and Live Scan prints for the Department of Justice; providers on its registry have also given caregiving references and passed an interview. Registration with California's aide registry is a hiring condition at agencies, though a self-employed caregiver can sign up too. Nursing assistants are certified by CDPH; Evergreen Valley College in San Jose runs a state-approved course. Beyond that, phone two past employers, let your relative join the conversation, and book one paid trial visit before settling on regular days. Ordering a background report, which requires the applicant to consent in writing, is up to you; CaregiverConnect does not screen caregivers.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where do you start from, and how long is the drive to this address at 8 a.m.?
- What experience do you have with patients coming home from Valley Medical Center, Good Samaritan, Kaiser or Stanford?
- Are you enrolled as a Santa Clara County IHSS provider, CDPH-certified or on the state aide registry?
- My mother speaks Mandarin (or Vietnamese, or Spanish). How comfortable are you caring for her in it?
- Would you go with my father on VTA ACCESS, or drive him and bill mileage?
- Can you keep a simple daily log we can read from out of town?
- Is your rate the same for nights, weekends and holidays?
What in-home care costs in Santa Clara County: hourly rates and schedules

Longer and less frequent shifts work best, or live-in help from someone already based in Morgan Hill or Gilroy.

| Employed aides, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties) | $18.09 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Santa Clara County | $20.44 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Price a private arrangement against several local benchmarks. BLS put the metro's aide median at $18.09 and mean at $18.92 in May 2025. County IHSS pays $20.44. CareScout's statewide agency median is $40. Several cities also set minimum wages above the state's $16.90, from $18.45 in San Jose to $19.70 in Mountain View, while the West Valley towns and the South County stay at the state rate. Ask the city whether its ordinance covers a household that hires directly. Direct arrangements in the county commonly fall somewhere in the range from the IHSS wage to the CareScout agency median. California treats a ninth daily hour, or a 46th weekly one, as overtime for a personal attendant. If your relative is older, blind or disabled and has a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, ask IHSS for an in-home assessment first: (408) 792-1600.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Santa Clara County: frequently asked questions
How does a parent in Santa Clara County get IHSS?
Contact county IHSS social services on (408) 792-1600. The program is for aged, blind and disabled people with a Medi-Cal eligibility determination; a social worker visits to assess the hours, and the provider your parent chooses, who may be a relative, is paid $20.44 an hour.
Does the county keep a list of IHSS caregivers?
Yes, once IHSS is approved. Call the Public Authority registry on (408) 350-3251 for lists of enrolled, pre-screened providers. You interview them and remain the employer.
I am the main family caregiver. Who can help me?
Start with Sourcewise Caregivers Network, (408) 350-3200, option 1, for support groups, a care plan and respite. If your relative has dementia, a stroke or another brain impairment, Family Caregiver Alliance also serves the county.
My father lives in Gilroy. Will anyone apply?
Post with his ZIP code and offer a mileage allowance or longer shifts. Caregivers living in the South County see the post first, and some from south San Jose will take a longer block of hours.
Is there an affordable way for my mother to get to appointments?
Seniors pay $1 a ride on VTA buses and light rail. If a disability keeps her off them, apply for VTA ACCESS. In Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Martin, Sourcewise Transit Service rides are free for eligible older adults.
Does CaregiverConnect vet the caregivers?
No. The platform does not check anyone; you handle references, interviews and any background report. You can post at no cost; messaging and confirming a hire require Family Premium.
