How to find an in-home caregiver in Monterey County

Who answers your post depends heavily on where in Monterey County the house is. Salinas has the largest working-age population and a median age of 32.4. The Peninsula is older and more spread out: in the ACS 2020–2024, 58.0% of Carmel-by-the-Sea residents are 65 or over, and one in five people in the City of Monterey. A caregiver who lives in Salinas or Seaside may happily take a Carmel Valley job but will want enough hours to justify the drive, so a post offering four-hour blocks or longer, plus mileage for errands, usually gets more replies than one asking for an hour at a time. In Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield and King City, describe the town and the nearest cross street clearly.

Language is the next filter. Across the county, 56.3% of people aged five and up use a language besides English at home, and Spanish accounts for the great majority (ACS 2020–2024). When a parent understands Spanish better than English, that belongs in the post's opening line. Profiles on this page are ordered nearest-first from whichever ZIP code you enter, and new ones appear as caregivers sign up, so look again a few days after posting.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Monterey County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Monterey County

Ask each applicant for proof of anything they claim. Someone enrolled as a Monterey County IHSS provider has completed the county's online enrollment, watched the state orientation and signed the provider documents at the county office, and a Public Authority Registry member has also applied to the registry. Agency-employed aides must be listed with the state Home Care Aide Registry, while for an independent caregiver the listing is optional. Nursing assistants are certified by CDPH, and two local schools teach the course, Mission Trails ROP in Salinas and Monterey Adult School in Seaside. Beyond paperwork, phone a couple of previous clients, let your parent sit in on the interview, and book a paid try-out shift before committing to regular hours. The platform itself performs no screening of any kind; a background report is something you would arrange, with the applicant's signed permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which hospital discharges have you helped with: Community Hospital, Salinas Valley Health, Natividad or Mee Memorial?
  • From which town would you commute, and what does that trip look like on a weekday morning?
  • Are you enrolled with Monterey County IHSS or on the Public Authority Registry?
  • My father slips into Spanish late in the day; is that a problem for you?
  • Would you ride MST RIDES with my mother as her personal care attendant, or drive her yourself?
  • How do you handle a fall if you are alone with a client?
  • Are your weekend and holiday rates different from weekday rates?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Price the job against four numbers. The California minimum is $16.90, and the Labor Center at UC Berkeley lists no local ordinance anywhere in Monterey County. Employed aides in the Salinas metro earn a $16.92 median (EDD, first quarter 2026), while the county pays IHSS providers $21.04. CareScout puts the statewide median for agency non-medical care at $40 an hour. Private arrangements usually land somewhere between the IHSS rate and the agency median, with nights and live-in work toward the top. California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights adds overtime at one and a half times the rate once a personal attendant passes 9 hours a day or 45 a week. If your parent's income and savings are limited, ask about IHSS on (831) 755-4466 before you budget private hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Monterey County: frequently asked questions

What is the first step toward IHSS for a Monterey County parent?

Phone the county on (831) 755-4466, or (831) 385-7400 from the King City area. Eligibility depends on income and resources, and the program can pay for help with housekeeping, meals, laundry, rides to medical appointments and personal care.

Who can I call for advice before hiring anyone?

The county Senior Helpline, (831) 755-4466, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its social workers refer older adults, people with disabilities and family caregivers to local services, and they can tell you which programs your parent may qualify for.

Is there adult day care in the county?

Yes, in Salinas: La Casa Adult Day Health Center appears in the state aging directory. Phone the center about eligibility, fees and attendance days before you plan the rest of the week around it.

Can a caregiver ride along on MST RIDES?

Yes. If your parent is certified for MST RIDES, a personal care attendant travels free and must get on and off at the same stops. One extra companion can also ride by paying the regular RIDES fare.

Will CaregiverConnect vet applicants for us?

It will not. Vetting, from reference calls to any background report, stays with your family. Posting a request is free; Family Premium, at $24.99 a month, unlocks messaging and lets you confirm a hire.

My mother lives in King City. Will anyone apply?

Post with her King City ZIP code so the request reaches caregivers in south county first, and be clear about hours and any mileage you will pay. Longer shifts make the trip worthwhile for someone driving from Greenfield or Soledad.
