How to find an in-home caregiver in Santa Cruz County
Think about the commute before you post. Most of the county lives along Highway 1, between the City of Santa Cruz in the north and Watsonville in the south, with Capitola, Soquel and Aptos in between, and a caregiver living anywhere on that corridor can usually reach a home near it. Homes in the San Lorenzo Valley or the Santa Cruz Mountains are harder to staff. The county IHSS registry has said it cannot find enough providers for those communities or for north county, so a family in the hills or central Santa Cruz may need to offer mileage, longer shifts or a slightly higher rate.
In ACS 2020–2024, a third of the county's residents over four (33.6%) use another home language, most often Spanish (26.4%). Say which language makes your parent most comfortable. The caregiver list here begins with the people nearest the ZIP code typed in and lengthens as more sign up.

The communities of Santa Cruz County
Local differences worth knowing before you post.
- City of Santa CruzThe county seat, 63,065 residents; the IHSS registry is short of providers willing to work here, so post early.
- WatsonvillePopulation 50,454, with Elderday, Lift Line, the Seniors Council and an IHSS office all in town; most residents speak Spanish at home.
- Capitola and SoquelCapitola has 9,669 residents; Senior Network Services has its main office on Soquel Drive.

Types of in-home care families in Santa Cruz County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Santa Cruz County
Ask which credentials an applicant holds, then check them. A Santa Cruz County IHSS provider has gone through an in-person orientation and Live Scan fingerprinting; a provider on the Public Authority registry was also interviewed in person and had professional references checked. Licensed agencies have to register the aides they send; caregivers working independently can join that state registry if they wish. Certified nursing assistants are certified by CDPH; Cabrillo College trains them locally. Next, speak with two former employers, have your relative take part in the interview, and pay for one sample shift before settling the weekly plan. Nothing on CaregiverConnect is vetted; if a background report matters to you, order one after the caregiver signs a consent form.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Which town would you drive from, and how do you cope with Highway 1 at rush hour?
- Are you comfortable driving mountain roads in winter rain?
- Have you cared for anyone after a stay at Dominican Hospital or Watsonville Community Hospital?
- Has the county enrolled you for IHSS, and did you go through the registry interview?
- When my mother is worn out she drops into Spanish. Could you keep up?
- Would you help my father get to Elderday or book Lift Line rides for him?
- What would you do if he refused to take his medication?
What in-home care costs in Santa Cruz County: hourly rates and schedules
North county and the coast. Short morning and evening visits for meals, medication and getting ready for the day. Mid-county. Weekday blocks while adult children work, with drives to appointments. The mountains. Fewer, longer shifts so the drive is worth it. Watsonville and the south. Daytime care around an adult day program, and family members sharing shifts with a paid caregiver.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Santa Cruz–Watsonville metro (Santa Cruz County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Santa Cruz County | $20.90 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Set your rate against four reference points. California's minimum is $16.90 an hour, and no city in this county sets a higher one, according to the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory. BLS puts the local aide median at $16.50 (May 2025, the county is its own metro). County IHSS pays its providers $20.90. At the top end, agency non-medical care sits at $40 an hour, CareScout's California median. A direct-hire rate somewhere between the IHSS and agency figures is a sensible place to start. Long days cost more: state rules make any shift hour after the ninth, and weekly hours over 45, overtime for a personal attendant. If Medi-Cal covers your parent and hands-on help is needed, phone IHSS at (831) 454-4101 before budgeting private hours; the program may pay for some of them.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Santa Cruz County: frequently asked questions
How does my parent apply for IHSS in Santa Cruz County?
Phone (831) 454-4101, send in the SOC 295 by email or fax, or visit the Watsonville or Santa Cruz office. IHSS confirms Medi-Cal eligibility, a health professional completes the SOC 873 certification, and a social worker visits the home to decide on monthly hours.
Can the county help us find an IHSS provider?
Yes. Once your parent is an IHSS recipient, the Public Authority registry at (831) 454-4036 asks about location, language and schedule and mails a list of matching providers. Your parent remains the employer and does the interviewing.
Is there adult day care in the county?
Elderday, run by Community Bridges, opens weekdays at 501 Main Street in Watsonville and provides free door-to-door transport through Lift Line from anywhere in the county. It is free for people who qualify for Medi-Cal.
Who can help me sort out Medicare or long-term care options?
Senior Network Services gives Medicare (HICAP) counseling, referrals and care management, through its Soquel headquarters (831-462-1433) or its Watsonville office (831-200-3405).
Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers?
It does not. CaregiverConnect leaves interviews, reference calls and background screening to the family. A post costs nothing, and messaging plus hire confirmation come with Family Premium for $24.99 monthly.
My mother lives in the mountains. Will anyone come?
Post with her own ZIP code and say whether you will pay mileage. The county registry itself has trouble finding providers for mountain communities, so longer shifts and clear directions make the job easier to accept.
