How to find an in-home caregiver in Santa Cruz

Hiring privately in Santa Cruz makes you the employer, and the pool of applicants can be tight. By the county Public Authority's own account, too few registry caregivers will take clients in the city or elsewhere in north county. Post early, give the hours you need and any flexibility, and say how a caregiver would reach the home: where to park, and whether a METRO stop is nearby. Families near the bus lines can also ask about ParaCruz, which only goes where a regular bus route runs nearby.

Older residents are a smaller share of the city than of the county (15.1% against 19.0% in ACS 2020–2024), but 2,793 Santa Cruz households consist of a person 65 or older living alone, and nearly three in ten of those 65-plus (29.1%) have a disability. If your parent prefers Spanish or any other language, open the post with it; 27.7% of city residents use a home language other than English. As more caregivers around the city sign up, their profiles are added below.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Santa Cruz

Ask what each applicant can prove. Enrolled Santa Cruz County IHSS providers attended an in-person orientation, presented original identity documents and passed a Live Scan check; anyone the registry refers has, in addition, sat an interview and passed reference checks. Agency staff must be listed on California's public aide registry, while joining it is optional for those who work on their own. CNAs hold CDPH certification, and you can confirm it. Call two or more references yourself, meet each finalist at the house so your parent can weigh in, then pay for a single try-out shift ahead of any fixed rota. The platform checks nobody; a background report is something you arrange, and only once the caregiver has agreed in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • After a discharge from Dominican Hospital, what did your first week with that client look like?
  • How will you get here, and what is your plan if Highway 1 traffic backs up?
  • Do you already hold an IHSS provider number in this county?
  • Could you ride the bus with my mother, or would you drive her to appointments?
  • Do you have regular commitments, such as classes or a second job, that limit your hours?
  • If my dad took a fall and begged you not to phone us, what would you do?
  • Have you worked with someone using a feeding tube?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Santa Cruz: hourly rates and schedules

Families in Santa Cruz often ask for early-day help with a shower, clothes and a first meal; company on the way to Dominican Hospital or a clinic; supper and pill checks at the end of the day; and short overnight stretches after surgery. Some families begin with two or three short visits weekly and build up from there.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Santa Cruz has not passed a local wage law, per UC Berkeley's tracking, which makes the state's $16.90 the lowest legal hourly pay. In practice, you are competing with the $20.90 that Santa Cruz County IHSS pays and with a short supply of caregivers in north county; the BLS county-wide aide median of $16.50 (May 2025) sits at the bottom of the range. CareScout's $40 statewide median for agency non-medical care sets the upper reference. Live-in or long-shift plans should budget for time and a half: California's domestic worker rules switch it on once a shift day passes nine hours or the week passes 45. With Medi-Cal in place, an IHSS application at the Emeline Avenue office comes first, since the program may cover some hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Santa Cruz: frequently asked questions

Why is it hard to find a caregiver in Santa Cruz?

The county's IHSS registry has said publicly that north county, the city included, is where it lacks willing providers. Posting well ahead of the start date and offering steady hours improves your chances.

Where does a Santa Cruz resident apply for IHSS?

Phone (831) 454-4101 or go to the third floor at 1400 Emeline Avenue. The SOC 295 form can also be sent by email or fax, or posted to IHSS Intake, P.O. Box 1320, Santa Cruz, CA 95061.

Can my father keep using the bus with a caregiver?

Yes. On regular METRO buses he pays the $1.00 discount fare if he is 65 or older. If he qualifies for ParaCruz, he can arrange for an assistant to travel with him on the shared ride.

Who can we ask about Medicare and home care options?

Senior Network Services in Soquel, 831-462-1433. It offers HICAP Medicare (HICAP) advice, general help finding services, and care management for older adults and people with disabilities.

Does CaregiverConnect vet the caregivers?

No vetting happens on the platform: profiles are self-described and nobody checks backgrounds or references. Posting is free, and $24.99 a month for Family Premium opens messaging and lets you confirm a hire.

What is the lowest legal hourly rate in Santa Cruz?

California's 2026 minimum, $16.90, because the city sets none higher. The $20.90 that county IHSS pays is a more useful reference point when you set a rate.
