Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County is compact, but its roads divide it. Highway 1 runs along the bay from the City of Santa Cruz past Capitola, Soquel and Aptos to Watsonville and the Pajaro Valley farmland, while Highway 17 climbs north over the mountains toward San Jose. The county's IHSS Public Authority says plainly where it is short: its registry needs more providers willing to work in north county, including Capitola and the City of Santa Cruz, more willing to work in the San Lorenzo Valley and Santa Cruz Mountain communities, and more with experience caring for high-needs clients who use G-tubes or tracheostomy tubes. If you can cover any of those, say so in the first lines of your profile.

Services cluster in two places. Westridge Drive in Watsonville holds an IHSS office, the Seniors Council and the county's main career center, and Emeline Avenue in Santa Cruz holds the other IHSS office. State your home ZIP code and the farthest you are prepared to drive. Language matters across the county: ACS 2020–2024 records a non-English home language for 33.6% of residents aged five-plus, with Spanish at 26.4%, a share that rises to 71.1% in Watsonville. A Spanish-speaking caregiver should lead with it.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Santa Cruz County

County households ask for things like a morning routine and breakfast for a widowed parent, transport to appointments at Dominican Hospital or Watsonville Community Hospital, overnight help after a hospital stay, and steady weekday hours with someone living with dementia. Newcomers generally get their start keeping a client company, running errands, cooking and doing light chores; tube feeding and other high-needs care go to people with documented experience or a nursing assistant certificate.

  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.

  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Santa Cruz County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Santa Cruz–Watsonville, CA metro (Santa Cruz County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Santa Cruz–Watsonville, CA metro (Santa Cruz County)$16.50 median ($18.14 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 4,470 jobs; concentration 1.64× national
IHSS provider wage, Santa Cruz County$20.90CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Santa Cruz–Watsonville, CA metro (Santa Cruz County)$23.05 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Because BLS draws this metro along the county line, its May 2025 numbers are purely local: 4,470 aides in home health and personal care, an $18.14 mean and a median at the $16.50 floor of the survey period. A location quotient of 1.64 means aide jobs make up a bigger share of employment here than in the country as a whole. County IHSS pays $20.90 from January 1, 2026, well above that median, which makes it the better reference when you set a private rate. Not one city here shows up in the July 2026 local-wage table kept by UC Berkeley's Labor Center; county-wide, $16.90 is the minimum an employer may pay. Nursing assistants in the metro earned a $23.05 median.

How to enroll as a provider in Santa Cruz County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Santa Cruz County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Santa Cruz County

No license is required when a household hires you itself for non-medical tasks. Agency jobs differ: a licensed home care organization has to enroll its aides on the state registry ($35, good for two years). To work for IHSS, call the Santa Cruz County IHSS Public Authority on (831) 454-4036 or start at the online enrollment center: watch the required provider videos, sign the enrollment form electronically and book an in-person orientation. Bring your original Social Security card and identification; late arrivals are turned away. At orientation you collect the Live Scan form, then pay the non-refundable fingerprinting fee at a Live Scan site. The registry is an extra step with an application, two professional references, an in-person interview and reference checks. Hospital and nursing-home employers want CDPH certification as a nursing assistant. Any caregiver who suspects abuse is required by law to report it, and county APS picks up at 1 (866) 580-4357 day or night. The rest is covered in IHSS in Santa Cruz County and the state requirements overview.

Caregiver jobs in Santa Cruz County: frequently asked questions

Which places in Santa Cruz County have their own page?

The City of Santa Cruz and Watsonville. If you live in Capitola, Scotts Valley, Aptos, Soquel, the San Lorenzo Valley or Freedom, this county page is yours; search with your ZIP.

What does IHSS pay in Santa Cruz County?

The CDSS county wage table lists $20.90 an hour, in effect from January 1, 2026. The rate is negotiated between the Public Authority, which is the employer of record for bargaining, and the provider union.

Does Santa Cruz or Watsonville have its own minimum wage?

No. Neither city, nor Capitola or Scotts Valley, has adopted one according to UC Berkeley's tracking of local wage laws, so California's $16.90 governs.

Where is the IHSS registry short of providers?

The Public Authority names three gaps: north county, including Capitola and the City of Santa Cruz; the San Lorenzo Valley and Santa Cruz Mountain communities; and clients with high needs such as G-tube or tracheostomy care. Call (831) 454-4036 to ask for a registry application.

When does the next CNA course start in the county?

Cabrillo College and the County Office of Education run two sessions in spring 2027, January to March and April to May. You must attend the orientation on November 5, 2026 to register for either one.

Where do families in the county post?

On the Santa Cruz County family page or on the Santa Cruz and Watsonville city pages. This page gathers requests from all of them.
