Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Monterey County

Think of the county as three separate places to find clients, all served by the same IHSS program. Salinas, the county seat, holds 159,866 of the county's 436,755 residents (Department of Finance, January 2026) and most of its working-age families. The Peninsula cities of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Seaside, Sand City and Del Rey Oaks have a much older population: in ACS 2020–2024, 58.0% of Carmel-by-the-Sea residents and 21.2% of people in the City of Monterey were 65 or over, against 10.6% in Salinas. South of Salinas, Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield and King City are smaller towns where the nearest hospital may be Mee Memorial in King City. A caregiver living in Salinas can serve a Carmel client, but the round trip eats into a short shift, so families and caregivers both weigh the distance before agreeing on hours.

Name the city you start from, whether you will work in Carmel Valley or south county, and whether you ride Monterey-Salinas Transit. Bilingual caregivers have an edge in this county: Spanish is the home language of 49.8% of residents aged five or more, and 46.1% of that group rate their English below very well in the ACS 2020–2024. If you are bilingual, put that in your first sentence.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Monterey County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County)$16.92 median ($17.53 mean)BLS OEWS, survey wages aged to Q1 2026 by California EDD; 6,740 jobs
IHSS provider wage, Monterey County$21.04CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County)$24.10 medianBLS OEWS, survey wages aged to Q1 2026 by California EDD (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

California's Employment Development Department, which runs the wage survey with BLS, puts aide employment (SOC 31-1120) at 6,740 in the Salinas metro area, which takes in Monterey County, with a $16.92 median and a $17.53 mean in its first-quarter 2026 release. That median sits two cents above the state minimum. IHSS is the better guide: the county's providers have been paid $21.04 hourly since July 1, about $4 more than the typical aide. Not one Monterey County city shows up in UC Berkeley's table of local wage ordinances, so the $16.90 state rate is the floor in Salinas, Monterey, Seaside and every other town here. Metro nursing assistants were paid a $24.10 median; if you plan to stay in the field, the two CNA courses below are the local route.

How to enroll as a provider in Monterey County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Monterey County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Monterey County

You need no state license to work directly for a household on non-medical care. Agency aides must hold a $35, two-year listing on the state's Home Care Aide Registry, an optional step for independents. For IHSS pay, the process starts with Monterey County IHSS through its online system, where you complete the provider information form and view the required state videos, after which you schedule an office visit to sign. After your welcome letter arrives, you may also join the Public Authority Registry, which refers providers to recipients who need one; the county line is (831) 755-4466. Hospital and nursing-home jobs require CDPH nursing assistant certification. State law makes you a mandated reporter of suspected elder or dependent adult abuse.
