Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Salinas

Salinas is a young city by Monterey County standards. Its median age is 32.4, only 10.6% of residents are 65 or older, and the average household holds 3.6 people (ACS 2020–2024). That shapes the work. Of the 12,092 Salinas households with someone 65 or older, just over a quarter are a senior living alone; most older residents share a home with relatives, so a job here often means filling the hours when adult children are at their jobs, or relieving a relative, rather than being someone's only support. Those 3,268 people living alone still add up, and 35.8% of residents past 65 report a disability, so families do post for regular personal care.

Language comes first in a Salinas profile. Spanish is spoken at home by 68.9% of Salinas residents over age four, and close to half of them (46.9%) are not fully comfortable in English. Being able to walk a client through new prescriptions or discharge instructions in Spanish matters to a lot of households here; put that in your opening line if it applies to you. Then list the Salinas ZIP codes you cover (93901, 93905, 93906, 93907) and say whether you also take jobs in Monterey, Seaside or Marina.

Caregiver pay in Salinas: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Salinas has no city minimum wage, and the Labor Center at UC Berkeley does not list it, which leaves the $16.90 state rate in force. The Employment Development Department's first-quarter 2026 figures for the metro, which covers all of Monterey County, show a $16.92 median and a $17.53 mean across the 6,740 aides (SOC 31-1120) it counts. The county IHSS wage of $21.04, effective July 1, 2026, is a much better yardstick when you set a private rate. Metro nursing assistants earned $24.10 at the median, the step up for anyone who finishes the Mission Trails ROP course and passes the state exam.

How to enroll as a provider in Monterey County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Monterey County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Salinas

A Salinas family can hire you for non-medical help without any license. Agency employment is different: the agency has to register you with the state aide registry, at $35 per two-year term, while self-employed caregivers decide for themselves whether to register. IHSS in Salinas is run by the county Department of Social Services. Applicants use the county's online enrollment site for the provider form and the mandatory state videos, and finish with a signing appointment in person; questions go to (831) 755-4466. Once you are active, the Public Authority Registry can match you with other recipients. Hospitals and nursing homes hire only CDPH-certified nursing assistants. California also treats you as a mandated reporter: suspected abuse of a client must be reported. More detail: Monterey County IHSS guide and California caregiver requirements.
