Finding in-home caregiver jobs in King City

Much of the paid care work in King City starts at one address. George L. Mee Memorial Hospital at 300 Canal Street describes itself as a critical access hospital, with 25 acute care beds and a 48-bed skilled nursing unit on its second floor. Its transitional care (swing bed) program lets patients recover close to home after a hospital stay anywhere, and the hospital says its nursing unit offers Spanish-speaking help. Mee also runs a medical clinic at 210 Canal Street and a children's health center on Broadway, and Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas has a medical and dental clinic at 122 San Antonio Drive. A patient who goes home from Mee's transitional care often still needs someone at home, and that is where private and IHSS work begins.

The CDSS licensing files list neither an elderly residential care home nor a licensed home care organization in King City. So outside the hospital, paid care is mostly arranged directly between families and caregivers, or through IHSS. King City is young, with a median age of 29.7 in ACS 2020–2024, and only 9.1% of residents (1,235 people) are 65 or older. Yet 768 of the city's 3,242 households, nearly a quarter, include an older person, and households here average 4.18 people. Write in your profile that you speak Spanish if you do: Spanish is the household language for 79.1% of King City residents past age four, and 46.3% speak Spanish and report limited English.

About 7.5% of King City's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. The county as a whole averaged 7.4% and California 5.3%, while King City's monthly estimate moved between 5.8% and 11.2%. Caring for a relative can be paid work: IHSS pays the provider a recipient names for county-approved hours, and the Monterey County IHSS guide lays out the enrollment steps.

Pay

Caregiver pay in King City: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County)$16.92 median ($17.53 mean)BLS OEWS, survey wages aged to Q1 2026 by California EDD; 6,740 jobs
IHSS provider wage, Monterey County$21.04CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County)$24.10 medianBLS OEWS, survey wages aged to Q1 2026 by California EDD (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The EDD figures cover the entire Salinas metro area, so they are a countywide yardstick rather than a King City measurement. The City of King has passed no wage ordinance that UC Berkeley's Labor Center tracks, so private work here starts at California's $16.90. IHSS pays $21.04 for each authorized hour, which beats the $16.92 metro aide median by a wide margin. Money is tighter in King City than in much of the county. Half of its households live on less than $66,761 a year (ACS 2020–2024), and 12.4% of people past 65 are below the federal poverty line. Families may combine a few private hours with IHSS, so agree on mileage and weekend rates up front. With Mee Memorial running a skilled nursing unit in town, CNA certification (metro median $24.10) is a direct path to facility shifts.

How to enroll as a provider in Monterey County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Monterey County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to King City

King City follows the state rules. Non-medical work arranged straight with a King City household needs no license. A licensed agency can only send you to clients once your name is on the Home Care Aide Registry (a CDSS list), while nursing-unit jobs such as those at Mee Memorial require CDPH nursing assistant certification. For IHSS, Monterey County keeps an Aging and Adult Services office in town at 116 Broadway Street, (831) 385-7400 (TTY (831) 386-0537), alongside its Salinas office; provider enrollment itself is handled by the county program, which the hub page and IHSS guide describe step by step. California treats caregivers as mandated reporters, so if you suspect an elder or a dependent adult is being harmed you must report it; APS takes those calls on 1-833-401-0832. The statewide rules are laid out in our California caregiver requirements guide.
