Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Monterey

Care work in Monterey follows an older population. The 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts 6,291 residents aged 65 and up, 21.2% of the city, and 1,135 of them are 85 or older. A third of Monterey households (33.7%) include someone 65-plus, and 1,906 households are someone 65 or over on their own. Help for them is usually counted in hours, not days: a shower, lunch, a ride to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and someone to notice when something changes. Requests from the 93940 ZIP code and from nearby peninsula towns show up above as families publish them.

Distances here are short: the average commute for Monterey workers is 18.5 minutes, 9.2% walk to work, and 7.1% of households have no vehicle at all, so some clients will need you to drive them. Note in your profile if you own a car and how far around the peninsula you will travel. Monterey Peninsula College and CSU Monterey Bay students ride MST buses free with a photo ID during the fall and spring semesters, which makes part-time shifts workable for students. Spanish is spoken at home by 15.1% of residents five and older; if you speak it, or any other language, put it in your first line.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Monterey: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County)$16.50 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025
IHSS provider wage, Monterey County$21.04CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Salinas, CA metro (Monterey County)$23.50 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory, last revised in September 2026, lists no Monterey wage ordinance, so California's $16.90 is the legal floor. BLS puts the median for employed aides across the Salinas metro, which covers all of Monterey County, at $16.50 an hour in the 2025 data, the same figure for the 25th percentile, while the 90th percentile reaches $18.59. Monterey County IHSS has paid providers $21.04 since July 1, 2026, more than four dollars above that median, and nursing assistants in the metro earn a $23.50 median. Those two figures are the better guide when you set a private rate on the peninsula, where Monterey renters pay a median of $2,353 a month. If you work as a personal attendant, overtime at one and a half times your rate begins after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week.

How to enroll as a provider in Monterey County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Monterey County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
