How to find an in-home caregiver in Monterey
When you hire directly in Monterey, you are the employer: you choose the person, set the schedule and pay the wage, which cannot fall below California's $16.90 an hour since the city has no local minimum. In your post, describe where the home is, whether a parent lives in New Monterey, near downtown or up off Holman Highway, and whether a caregiver will need to drive your parent or can rely on MST buses.
Language matters for some families. In the 2020–2024 ACS, 26.9% of Monterey residents five and older use a language besides English at home, and 15.1% speak Spanish. Put your parent's preferred language near the top of your post. Profiles of caregivers near the 93940 ZIP code appear below as they join, so look again a few days after you publish.

Evaluating caregivers in Monterey
Ask each applicant which credentials they actually hold. An IHSS provider in Monterey County has enrolled online, watched the state orientation videos and finished the process in person at the county IHSS office; registry referrals from the Public Authority have also supplied two professional references and sat for an interview with a registry social worker. Aides who work for licensed home care agencies must be listed on the state Home Care Aide Registry, which is optional for independent caregivers. A CNA should be able to show a CDPH certificate. Next, phone two past employers, hold the interview at home with your parent there, and book a single paid trial shift. CaregiverConnect does not screen anyone's history; with the caregiver's written permission you can order a check yourself.

- Do you drive, and are you comfortable taking my mother to appointments on Holman Highway or in Salinas?
- Have you booked MST RIDES trips or used taxi vouchers with a client?
- Do you work as a Monterey County IHSS provider, and are you listed with the Public Authority?
- Is my father able to talk with you in Spanish, or in the language he grew up with?
- Would you go with him to the Scholze Park Center for lunch or a class?

| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The legal floor in Monterey is the state's $16.90. Employed home health and personal care aides in the Salinas metro earned a $16.50 median in the BLS 2025 data, Monterey County pays IHSS providers $21.04 an hour, and the CareScout 2025 survey sets the statewide agency homemaker median at $40 an hour. Use those last two numbers as the range to think within. Long days cost more: the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights requires time and a half for a personal attendant once a shift passes nine hours or the week passes 45. For a parent with limited income who needs hands-on care, an IHSS application (831-755-4466) comes first; the program may pay for part of the hours.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Monterey: frequently asked questions
What is the lowest legal hourly wage for a Monterey caregiver?
$16.90, California's 2026 rate; Monterey has not adopted a higher local minimum. If you are aiming for experienced help, the $21.04 county IHSS wage is a better anchor.
My father has stopped driving. How does he get around Monterey?
At 65 or older he can pick up MST taxi vouchers at Scholze Park Center. If his disability rules out the regular bus, apply for MST RIDES; a caregiver traveling as his attendant rides free.
Where can my mother have lunch with other people on weekdays?
Scholze Park Center on Dickman Avenue hosts a Meals on Wheels lunch for people over 60 every weekday from 11 to noon, plus classes and trips. Call (831) 646-3878 to reserve.
Could IHSS pay me for caring for Mom or Dad?
It can. IHSS recipients hire, train and supervise their own provider, so the person they choose may be someone they already know. That person enrolls online through REVA and finishes at the county office; our family caregiver pay guide explains the rules, and 831-755-4466 starts the application.
Does CaregiverConnect act as an agency?
No. Families publish a request, look over the replies, and hire and pay the caregiver directly. There is no charge to post; messaging applicants and marking a hire require Family Premium at $24.99 monthly.
