How to find an in-home caregiver in Seaside
Hiring privately makes your family the employer, with California's $16.90 hourly minimum as the floor; Seaside has no local wage ordinance. Be specific in the post about the street or neighborhood, whether a parent needs rides into Monterey for hospital visits, and what hours you need covered. Because Seaside households are larger than Monterey's (2.90 people per home in the 2020–2024 ACS), say who else lives in the house and when relatives are there, so applicants know how the work will be shared.
Language should be one of the first lines. In Seaside, 35.1% of people aged five and up use Spanish at home and 44.8% use some language besides English; and nearly half of those Spanish speakers (49.4%) do not consider their English very good. When a parent prefers Spanish or another language, name it, and ask each applicant to rate their own fluency. Evaluating caregivers in Seaside
Start with paperwork that can be confirmed. Anyone working as a Monterey County IHSS provider has registered through the online REVA system, watched the state orientation videos and completed enrollment at the Salinas IHSS office; registry members have additionally provided two professional references and passed an interview. Agency-employed caregivers must be on the Home Care Aide Registry. Certified nursing assistants, including graduates of local courses such as the one at Monterey Adult School, hold a CDPH certificate. Next, phone references yourself, hold interviews where your parent can take part, and pay for one trial shift before committing. Background checks are not something CaregiverConnect does; with the caregiver's written consent you can order one directly.
Questions families here ask at interview

- Do you drive, and can you take my father to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for appointments?
- Have you worked in a home where other relatives live and help with care?
- Are you an enrolled Monterey County IHSS provider?
- Would you go with my mother to lunch or an exercise class at the Oldemeyer Center?
- What do you do when a client with dementia tries to leave the house on her own?

| Employed aides, Salinas metro (all of Monterey County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Monterey County | $21.04 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Your legal minimum is $16.90 an hour. For comparison, the BLS 2025 median for employed aides across the Salinas metro was $16.50, Monterey County IHSS providers earn $21.04, and CareScout found a California median of $40 an hour for agency homemaker services. Caregivers who live on the peninsula face high rents (Seaside renters pay a $2,409 median gross rent), so keep that in mind when you set a rate; the IHSS wage is a sensible reference point. Live-in and long-shift arrangements carry overtime: time and a half is owed to a personal attendant for hours beyond nine a day or 45 a week. 16.9% of Seaside residents 65 and older live below the poverty line; if your parent is one of them, call IHSS on 831-755-4466 before you hire, because the program may pay for some of the care.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
