How to find an in-home caregiver in King City

Most King City families who look for a caregiver are not choosing between home care and a facility, because neither a licensed elderly care home nor a home care agency has a King City address in the state's licensing data. The realistic choices are a relative or neighbor paid through IHSS, a private caregiver you hire yourself, or, for nursing-level needs, the 48-bed skilled nursing unit at Mee Memorial Hospital. Many requests start with a discharge. Mee's transitional care program lets a patient finish recovering at the hospital in King City, and when that stay ends someone has to manage meals, bathing, medications and follow-up visits at home.

Older people in King City usually live with family. In ACS 2020–2024, 768 households, close to a quarter of the city's 3,242, include someone 65 or older, while only 95 older residents live alone. Spanish is the home language of 79.1% of residents five and up, so if your father prefers Spanish, say so at the very top of the request. Name the clinic he uses, Mee's Canal Street clinic or Clinica de Salud on San Antonio Drive, and say whether you need a caregiver with a car; 4.4% of King City households have no vehicle at all. Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in King City

Begin with documents you can verify. If a licensed agency sends the aide, look them up in the state's online Home Care Aide Registry, where agency staff must be enrolled; a caregiver working independently may have skipped it. CDPH issues CNA certificates, so ask for the number, and ask anyone with experience in a skilled nursing unit such as Mee Memorial's to talk you through a safe transfer and how they check skin for pressure sores. Enrolled Monterey County IHSS providers have finished the county orientation and fingerprinting. Then phone references, bring your relative into the conversation, and pay for one trial day before agreeing to a weekly schedule. CaregiverConnect performs no background screening, so if you want a report, arrange and pay for it yourselves with the caregiver's written authorization.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • My mother is coming home from Mee's swing beds next week. What would your first three days with her look like?
  • ¿Puede comunicarse con mi abuela solo en español, también con sus medicamentos?
  • Could you take my mother to Mee Memorial's clinic on Canal Street and stay with her during the visit?
  • Do you drive, or would you rely on MST Line 34 during the week?
  • Are you an IHSS provider, or would you enroll if the county authorizes hours for my father?
  • If my father suddenly became confused or ran a fever, what would you do first?
  • Our family works long days; can you cover early mornings before 7?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in King City: hourly rates and schedules

Typical King City posts ask for several weeks of daily help after a Mee Memorial discharge, weekday daytime care while the household is at work, a caregiver for clinic days, and evening visits for dinner and medications. Line 34 does not run on weekends or major holidays, so weekend care usually needs a caregiver who drives.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The Labor Center's inventory at UC Berkeley has no City of King ordinance, which means anyone you employ earns at least the state minimum, $16.90. To compare, Monterey County aides typically made $16.92 an hour in EDD's early-2026 survey, IHSS providers get $21.04, and CareScout's $40 California agency median is the yardstick for agency care, since no licensed agency has a King City address. King City households that employ a personal attendant owe 1.5 times the hourly rate for every hour after the ninth in a King City workday and for weekly hours beyond 45, as the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights sets out. With half of local households under $66,761 a year and 12.4% of residents past 65 in poverty (ACS 2020–2024), look at IHSS before anything else: CDSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, after which the county pays whichever provider your relative chooses.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Can my father recover at Mee Memorial instead of going straight home?

Mee runs a transitional care (swing bed) program for patients who need more recovery time after a hospital stay, even one at another hospital. Ask his doctor or call (831) 385-7211 to see whether he qualifies.
