How to find an in-home caregiver in Coalinga

Begin by being clear about the level of care. Coalinga Regional Medical Center on Phelps Avenue has skilled nursing units as well as acute beds, so many local requests start at discharge: someone to help a parent home from the hospital or the nursing unit and stay for the first weeks. Others are for steady weekday help, such as meals, bathing and a ride to the clinic, for an older person who lives alone; in the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey, 373 Coalinga homes housed just one resident, aged 65 or more. Say which you need, roughly how many hours a week, and whether nights are involved.

Then mention language. Close to half of Coalinga residents speak Spanish at home, and a smaller group is more comfortable in Spanish than English, so put that first if it describes your relative. Coalinga has a sizeable health-care workforce, and caregivers who apply may have hospital, clinic or CNA experience; ask about it in the interview. New posts and caregiver profiles appear on this page as soon as they are published.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Coalinga

Ask to see whatever the caregiver holds: a CNA certificate (check it on the CDPH lookup), a Home Care Aide Registry number, which is optional for independents, or a Fresno County IHSS provider enrollment, which required a background check. If someone describes state hospital or nursing-unit experience, ask what tasks they did and who you can call to confirm it. Hold a paid trial shift before you commit. CaregiverConnect itself performs no screening or background checks, so with the caregiver's written permission you may want to order a consumer background check yourself.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • My father is coming home from the skilled nursing unit at Coalinga Regional. Have you helped someone through the first weeks after a discharge like that?
  • He goes to dialysis on Phelps Avenue three days a week. Could you drive him and wait, or meet him when he gets home?
  • My mother has dementia and gets agitated late in the day. How have you handled that before?
  • ¿Se siente cómoda hablando español con ella todo el día?
  • Are you a CNA, and where did you do your clinical training?
  • If she has a fall in the evening, what would you do first, and who would you call?
  • Could you take her to Fresno by car for a specialist, and how would you charge for that day?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Coalinga: hourly rates and schedules

Families in Coalinga commonly post short morning visits for bathing and medicines, weekday blocks around a working adult's hours, dialysis-day support, and full days for the first week after a hospital discharge. Because Dial-A-Ride stops at 4:15 pm and does not run on weekends, evening and weekend requests usually need a caregiver with a car. Live-in arrangements are possible but less common.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Coalinga's median household income was $75,451 in the 2020–2024 survey, but 21.7% of residents lived below the poverty line, and 47.1% of residents have public health coverage. For a parent with Medi-Cal, Fresno County IHSS pays $18.75 an hour to a provider the family selects, for the hours the county approves. Paying privately, expect to offer at least the IHSS rate for personal care by someone experienced, and closer to the $16.90 minimum for companionship and errands. The $40 statewide agency median shows what an agency would charge.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Coalinga

Agree in writing on the duties, schedule, rate and how overtime works; a personal attendant is owed overtime for any hour after nine in a day, or after 45 in a week, under state law. Both of you should sign a timesheet weekly; lock away medications that need supervision, and do not hand over bank cards or PINs. If you suspect mistreatment, Fresno County's APS Careline takes calls around the clock at (559) 600-3383; if your relative lives in a nursing facility, call the regional ombudsman program on (559) 224-9177. Is there a place for my mother to spend part of the day?

The Coalinga-Huron Recreation and Park District runs the Welborn Center at 220 E. Forest Street, (559) 935-5001, which posts its kitchen and food pantry times; call to ask what suits an older adult. A caregiver can take her there by Dial-A-Ride.

Can a caregiver take my father to appointments in Fresno?

Yes, by car or on the Rural Transit Inter-City bus, which runs Monday to Saturday, reaches Fresno Community Hospital before 11 am and returns in the early evening. Settle in advance how the caregiver is paid for a day that long.

Will IHSS pay a caregiver to look after my parent in Coalinga?

If your parent qualifies, Fresno County authorizes the hours and pays the provider $18.75 an hour; the family chooses who that provider is. Start the application by phone and ask the doctor for the health care certification form.

What will CaregiverConnect charge us?

You pay nothing to post or to look through applicants. Upgrading to Family Premium ($24.99 per month, cancel any time) unlocks messaging and lets you confirm a hire; the caregiver keeps everything you agree to pay.
