How to find an in-home caregiver in Fresno County
Start with geography. In the Fresno–Clovis metro, where two-thirds of the county lives, you have the widest choice of caregivers, seven adult day health centers on the state's list, FAX buses and Handy Ride paratransit, and the largest hospitals. On the east side, in Selma, Kingsburg, Fowler, Parlier, Sanger, Reedley and Orange Cove, a caregiver from the next town over is often the realistic pick, and Rural Transit's in-town buses are free for older and disabled riders. On the west side, in Kerman, Mendota, Firebaugh, San Joaquin, Huron and Coalinga, towns are far apart, so offer a mileage allowance or longer, less frequent shifts if no one local applies.
Language matters as much as distance. In the 2020–2024 ACS, a third of county residents aged five and up (33.3%) speak Spanish at home, 17.0% report limited English, and Asian or Pacific Island languages are the home tongue of 5.8%. If your parent relaxes more in Spanish, Hmong, Punjabi or another language, say so at the top of the post. Profiles shown above are ordered by how far each caregiver is from the ZIP code in your search and change as new people sign up, so search with your relative's address, not yours.

Types of in-home care families in Fresno County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Fresno County
Fresno County caregivers may carry any of three verifiable credentials. IHSS providers have attended the county orientation and cleared Department of Justice fingerprinting; the Public Authority registry adds a Zoom screening and requires CPR and First Aid. California requires every agency-employed aide to be on its Home Care Aide Registry; self-employed caregivers can opt in for $35. Nursing assistant certificates are issued by CDPH once someone finishes an approved course, for example at Fresno Adult School or Clovis Adult Education. Even the Public Authority says its registry does not vouch for the people it refers, so do the rest yourself: ring two earlier employers yourself, let your relative sit in on the interview, get signed permission before any background report, and start with one paid trial shift. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens applicants, and the Verified badge simply shows that a file was submitted.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where would your drive start, and could you arrive by 8 in the morning?
- Have you helped someone home from Community Regional, Clovis Community or the Fresno VA?
- Are you an enrolled Fresno County IHSS provider, on the Public Authority registry, or a CNA?
- Can you talk with my mother in Spanish (or Hmong, or Punjabi) when she is tired or upset?
- Mom has dementia and sometimes heads out the door on hot afternoons; how would you handle that?
- Will you drive her to the adult day center and medical appointments, and what mileage rate would you ask?
- Is your rate different for nights or for Saturdays and Sundays?
What in-home care costs in Fresno County: hourly rates and schedules
Metro. Weekday daytime hours while adult children work, often paired with an adult day health center. East side. Morning and evening visits around family work schedules, plus weekend respite. West side. Fewer, longer shifts or live-in arrangements, since a daily commute from Fresno is rarely realistic.

| Employed aides, Fresno, CA metro (Fresno County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Fresno County | $18.75 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Nothing in Fresno County shows up on the Berkeley Labor Center's tally of local wage laws, so $16.90 is the legal floor for a private hire. The county's IHSS providers earn $18.75, and California's agency median for non-medical home care is $40 an hour per CareScout. Median household income in the county is $74,201 (ACS 2020–2024), so when a relative with Medi-Cal is aged, blind or disabled, ask about IHSS before paying privately: the county takes applications by phone at (559) 600-6666 or online. For private hires, a live-out personal attendant who works a tenth hour in one day, or a 46th hour in one week, earns overtime.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Fresno County: frequently asked questions
What are the steps to get IHSS for my father here?
Call (559) 600-6666 or apply online. He must have Medi-Cal (the county refers him if he does not), his doctor returns a Health Care Certification form within 45 days, and a social worker visits to decide his authorized hours. The provider he hires is paid $18.75 an hour.
Can IHSS help us find a caregiver if we do not know anyone?
Yes. Once IHSS is approved, the Public Authority registry sends a free list of providers to interview; ask for it at option 4 on the same number.
My mother lives in Mendota. Will anyone come out?
Post with her Mendota ZIP code so west-side caregivers see it first, and say whether you will cover mileage. Longer, less frequent shifts attract more applicants than short daily visits.
Where can I get support as the family caregiver?
Valley Caregiver Resource Center at (559) 224-9154 runs support groups, counseling and respite help through the Area Agency on Aging's Family Caregiver Support Program.
Is there door-to-door transport outside Fresno?
Fresno County Rural Transit offers curb-to-curb demand-response service for riders who need it, alongside its regular routes; call (855) 612-5184. Inside the FAX area, Handy Ride serves riders whose disability rules out the regular bus.
Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers?
No. Posting is free; you check references and credentials yourself, and you pay for Family Premium, $24.99 monthly, only when you want to message caregivers and confirm the one you choose.
