How to find an in-home caregiver in Mendota

Mendota has about 12,800 residents and a workforce in which more than half of employed people work in agriculture (ACS 2020–2024), so it is common for every working adult in a household to be away during the day while an older parent stays home. About one household in four (23.5%) includes someone 65 or older. Spanish is the home language for 85.1% of residents, and nearly half of those speakers report limited English, so state the language clearly at the top of your post. People who answer are likely to be Mendota neighbors, relatives already caring informally, and caregivers from Firebaugh, which has its own weekday shuttle to Mendota. What you see on this page refreshes whenever local caregivers or families add something.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Mendota

Start by asking whether the caregiver is listed on California's Home Care Aide Registry (optional for independents), whether they are an approved Fresno County IHSS provider, which involves a DOJ Live Scan, and whether they are a certified nurse assistant. Meet the person at home with your relative present, ask how they would handle a fall or a sudden fever, and phone two previous families. Try a few paid shifts first. CaregiverConnect itself neither checks backgrounds nor verifies anyone; for a record check, pay a consumer reporting agency once the caregiver signs an authorization.

  • ¿Se siente cómoda hablando solo español con mi mamá? She understands a little English but does not speak it.
  • Could you take her to her appointment at United Health Centers on Barboza Street and wait with her?
  • If she feels sick in the evening, would you take her to the urgent care there before it closes at 9?
  • Can you start before 6 a.m. during the harvest, when we leave for work?

  • Do you have experience with someone who has diabetes or high blood pressure?
  • Can you help her with Medi-Cal letters and appointments as well as daily care?

What in-home care costs in Mendota: hourly rates and schedules

Mendota postings usually ask for early weekday starts, a morning or midday block for bathing, meals and medicines, clinic visits, and more hours during the busiest farm months or after a hospital stay. If you need weekend help, say so in the post; the Barboza Street urgent care is open Saturday and Sunday if something comes up.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Mendota's median household income is $50,342 (ACS 2020–2024), and 26.8% of Mendota seniors are below the federal poverty level, so IHSS eligibility is worth checking. IHSS, for people with Medi-Cal or SSI who need care to stay home, pays the provider you choose $18.75 an hour in Fresno County; a son, daughter or neighbor can fill that role. Because 16.8% of Mendota residents have no health insurance, check Medi-Cal first: United Health Centers lists enrollment services at both Barboza Street sites. Private pay starts at the $16.90 state minimum.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
