How to find an in-home caregiver in Fowler

Fowler is a small city, but a good share of its homes are caring for an older relative. ACS 2020–2024 counts 783 residents aged 65 and over, including 342 between 75 and 84 and 37 who are 85 or older, and 551 of Fowler's 2,216 households have at least one person in that age range. A third of older residents (34.2%) report a disability. Many of these parents live with grown children in large households, averaging 3.18 people, while 244 people 65 and over live alone, almost all of them women.

That shapes what to post. If your parent lives with you, say which hours the house is empty and what has to happen while you are out: lunch, medications, a walk, a shower with someone standing by. If your parent lives alone, describe the morning and evening routine and whether someone should check in by phone. State the pay you are offering and whether the job needs a car. Language matters too: 41.1% of Fowler residents five and older speak Spanish at home, and 5.1% speak another Indo-European language, so name the one your parent prefers. Applicants usually live in Fowler or in Selma, Kingsburg, Sanger or Fresno, and the profiles and requests on this page change as caregivers and families sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Fowler

A Fowler caregiver can come to you by several routes, and each leaves a record you can check. Someone who trained as a nursing assistant, perhaps at one of the two skilled nursing facilities in town, will have a CDPH certificate you can look up. Someone sent by a licensed home care organization must already be listed on the state's Home Care Aide Registry. A Fresno County IHSS provider has been fingerprinted and gone through the county orientation. A private hire with none of these can still be the right person, but take more care: ask for two references from families they have worked for, call both, and ask the caregiver to describe a fall or a medical scare they handled. Pay for one or two trial shifts while you are at home to watch how they work with your parent. None of this is done by CaregiverConnect, which neither screens applicants nor confirms who they are; if you want a background check, get the applicant's signed permission before ordering one.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live, and on a bad-traffic day what time would you actually arrive at our house?
  • Could you drive my father to United Health Centers on Sixth Street or to Aria Community Health Center on Merced Street?
  • Would you take my mother to the senior center at Fowler Baptist Church at 10 a.m. and pick her up afterward?
  • Have you worked at Vineyards at Fowler, Fowler Care Center or The Harvest at Fowler, and what did you do there?
  • Are you already an IHSS provider in Fresno County, or willing to enroll if my parent is approved?
  • Do you speak Spanish, or the language my parent uses at home?
  • If my mother refuses a shower or her pills, what would you do?
  • Which days are you unable to work, and who could cover a shift if you are sick?
Schedules and cost

While the family is at work. Fowler workers average a 21.9-minute commute (ACS 2020–2024), so a common request is a weekday block from about 7 a.m. until mid-afternoon or early evening. Around the senior center. The city's senior program starts at 10 a.m. on weekdays, and some families book a short morning shift to get a parent ready and there. Short daily visits. An hour or two morning and evening for a parent living alone: medications, a meal, a check of the house. Recovery. More hours for a few weeks after a hospital or nursing-home stay, then fewer.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Fowler has no minimum-wage law of its own in UC Berkeley's local inventory, so a caregiver you employ directly must earn at least $16.90 an hour, and a personal attendant who works past nine hours in a day, or past 45 in a week, is owed 1.5 times the rate for the extra time. CareScout puts the California agency median at $40.00 an hour; hiring directly avoids the agency margin, but you take on the employer's paperwork. Where a parent is on Medi-Cal, start with a Fresno County IHSS application before committing to private pay. Approved hours are paid at $18.75 to the provider your parent names, and a son, daughter or other relative can be that provider. In ACS 2020–2024, 26.3% of Fowler households receive Social Security and 7.3% of residents 65 and over are below the poverty line.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Fowler

Settle the terms on paper before day one: what tasks are included, the schedule, the hourly and overtime rate, gas or mileage money, and the notice each of you owes the other. Have the caregiver record hours on a timesheet you both sign each week, and keep cash, cards, jewelry and spare prescriptions out of sight. If you think an older adult in Fowler is being harmed, neglected or taken advantage of, call 911 when there is immediate danger; otherwise phone California's statewide Adult Protective Services number, 1-833-401-0832, and type in 93625 when the system asks for a ZIP code. Our guide to hiring a private caregiver walks through contracts and payroll taxes; respite and other county-wide services are on the Fresno County families page.
