How to find an in-home caregiver in Riverdale

Riverdale is unincorporated, a census-designated place served by Fresno County agencies and local special districts rather than a city, and no state list places a licensed nursing home, assisted living or home care agency in its ZIP. What it does have are two primary care clinics on Mt. Whitney Avenue, run by Aria Community Health Center and Adventist Health. Care for an older relative is therefore mostly organized by the family: hours from Fresno County IHSS, a caregiver you pay yourself, or both. Per ACS 2020–2024, 194 of Riverdale's 819 households (23.7%) include a person aged 65-plus, and with an average of 4.46 people under one roof, a paid caregiver often works alongside relatives rather than alone.

Spell out the language your relative speaks. Census estimates give Spanish as the home language of 50.8% of Riverdale residents over four, about a third use only English, and 15.2% speak a language the Census Bureau groups as "other". Note the appointments involved, too: the Riverdale clinics provide primary care, so hospital and specialist visits mean a trip out of town. Below, profiles are ordered by distance from 93656; the list lengthens whenever a nearby caregiver signs up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Riverdale

Begin with what is on record. Fresno County IHSS providers have done the county's online enrollment and orientation, shown ID in person in Clovis and cleared state fingerprinting. Agency-placed aides are required to hold CDSS home care aide registration, which is optional for someone working independently. CNAs carry a CDPH certificate whose status is searchable. After that, phone two earlier clients or bosses, hold the interview in the house where care will be given and let your relative ask questions, and pay for a trial shift before settling on a schedule. CaregiverConnect does not screen caregivers or confirm references or licenses; if you want a background check, you arrange it, and the caregiver must agree in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Would you bring Dad to the Aria or Adventist Health clinic on Mt. Whitney Avenue and stay through the visit?
  • Could Mom and you talk in Spanish through the whole shift, medicines included?
  • If an appointment is in Fresno, would you ride the Coalinga Inter-city bus with her or drive her yourself?
  • Do you already have Fresno County IHSS provider status, Live Scan included?
  • How have you helped someone with transfers from bed to chair without hurting either of you?
  • Our home is busy with children and grandchildren. How would you keep my grandmother's routine calm?
  • What would you do in the first minutes if my father fell or seemed confused?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Neither Riverdale nor the rest of unincorporated Fresno County appears in UC Berkeley's local wage-law inventory, which puts the floor for privately paid care at California's $16.90. Reference points: BLS measured a $16.50 median for Fresno-metro aides in May 2025; Riverdale IHSS providers earn the county's $18.75; while the CareScout 2025 median for an agency-supplied aide statewide was $40.00 an hour. Hire an attendant yourself and the state's domestic-worker overtime rule follows: a tenth hour on a Riverdale shift, or a 46th hour that week, earns half again the usual wage. Look into IHSS before committing to a long private schedule: Fresno County requires that the person be 65 or older, blind or disabled, living in their own home, and on Medi-Cal or SSI/SSP, and applying is free.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
