How to find an in-home caregiver in San Joaquin

Hiring in San Joaquin tends to start inside the family. One household in five (20.2%, ACS 2020–2024) has someone 65 or older living in it, and more than half of the city's older residents report a disability, so a daughter, grandson or neighbor often does the caregiving already. The question is usually how to pay that person or how to add a few hours of outside help. Write your posting in the language your relative actually uses: 79.6% of residents speak Spanish at home. Say what time help is needed, because in a city where over half of employed people work in agriculture, early-morning starts are common. Include the ZIP code 93660 and make clear you mean the City of San Joaquin in Fresno County, not San Joaquin County. Caregivers and openings shown on this page change whenever someone in the area posts or joins.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in San Joaquin

The checks you can run yourself matter most when you hire independently. Ask whether the caregiver is on California's Home Care Aide Registry (voluntary for independent workers), whether they are already an enrolled Fresno County IHSS provider, which means they passed a DOJ fingerprint check, and whether they hold a CDPH nurse assistant certificate. Interview in Spanish and English if your parent switches between them, call two references, and book a paid trial shift or two before settling on a regular schedule. If you want a criminal record check, buy one from a consumer screening company after the caregiver agrees in writing. CaregiverConnect performs no background checks and no vetting.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • ¿Habla usted español con confianza? My father only speaks Spanish with people outside the family.
  • Can you come at 5:30 in the morning during the harvest months, when my wife and I leave for work?
  • He sees a doctor at Valley Health Team on Colorado Avenue; could you take him to appointments and stay with him?
  • Have you enrolled as a Fresno County IHSS provider, or would you sign up so the county can pay you?
  • What experience do you have with diabetes, or with lifting someone out of bed?
  • Will you drive, or would the two of you use the dial-a-ride?
  • What would you charge for weekday mornings only, and for a full Saturday?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in San Joaquin: hourly rates and schedules

San Joaquin families typically ask for weekday morning blocks before relatives go to the fields, a few hours around lunch and medications, help on clinic days, and longer cover during harvest or when the usual family caregiver is sick. If you need nights or live-in help, mention it up front so applicants can judge whether it fits.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With a median household income of $43,011 (ACS 2020–2024), few San Joaquin families can pay the $40 hourly agency median. The route most families use is IHSS: if your relative receives Medi-Cal or SSI and cannot manage safely alone, Fresno County sets the authorized hours and pays whichever provider you name, a family member included, $18.75 an hour. Private hire for extra hours has to be at least the $16.90 state minimum; the county metro median for aides was $16.50 in May 2025, below today's minimum.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
