Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Selma

Check what applicants hold. Registry listing is compulsory for agency aides, and independents can choose whether to join; IHSS providers are enrolled through Fresno County; and certified nursing assistants appear on CDPH's register; the closest courses are at Reedley College and Sanger Adult School. Look the credential up rather than accepting a photocopy. Speak with two references, including someone who supervised the caregiver at Bethel, Rolling Hills or another facility if they worked there. Meet at home so your parent is part of the interview, get written consent before any consumer background report, and begin with one paid trial shift. CaregiverConnect runs no checks itself; a Verified badge just marks a document sent in for review.

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Selma: hourly rates and schedules

Selma families typically post weekday daytime shifts while relatives work, morning visits for personal care, more hours in the weeks after a hospital discharge, and weekend or evening relief for the family member who lives with the parent. The Selma Senior Center opens weekdays from 8 to 2 with hot lunches, which can shorten the paid day.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Selma follows California's $16.90 minimum wage; it has no local ordinance. For comparison, Fresno County IHSS work pays $18.75, the metro's employed home aides sit at a $16.50 median, and agency non-medical care in California carries a $40 median. A private arrangement often lands near the IHSS figure, plus extra for nights, weekends and mileage. If you employ a personal attendant yourself, any hour beyond the ninth in a day, or beyond the 45th in a week, is overtime.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
