How to find a caregiver in Tulare County

Families in Tulare County usually combine three things. In-Home Supportive Services pays a caregiver the recipient chooses, often a relative, at $17.50 an hour for the hours the county authorises, if the person qualifies for Medi-Cal; applications go through the county Health and Human Services Agency in Visalia. A privately hired caregiver fills the hours IHSS does not cover, or replaces it for families who do not qualify; that is what this site is for. The third option is a facility, usually first raised by a hospital discharge planner.

No caregivers have joined CaregiverConnect from Tulare County yet, so the cards above will be empty until the first profiles are created locally; your posting is the thing that brings them. Describe the town, the days and time blocks, whether driving is involved and which language you need. Spanish is the home language of 46% of county residents, and in Dinuba, Cutler-Orosi, Earlimart and Porterville it is the majority; many caregivers here will be bilingual, and if your parent prefers Spanish say so in the first line.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Tulare County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Tulare County

Four things can be checked in Tulare County. The state Home Care Aide Registry (voluntary for independent caregivers; a listing means a CDSS background clearance). IHSS enrolment, which involves Department of Justice fingerprinting and a county orientation. A CNA certificate from CDPH, often earned at College of the Sequoias. Facility experience at Kaweah Health, Sierra View, Adventist Health Tulare or one of the county's nursing homes, which a reference call to a former supervisor will confirm. Then do the ordinary things: an interview with your relative present, two references by phone, a consumer-reporting background check with the caregiver's written consent, and paid trial shifts before committing to a schedule. CaregiverConnect does not run checks; a Verified badge only reflects a document a caregiver uploaded and staff reviewed.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which towns will you travel to, and do you have a reliable car for Highway 99 and the country roads?
  • Do you speak Spanish with the person you care for, not only with the family?
  • Have you held an IHSS case before, and are you enrolled with Tulare County now?
  • What experience do you have with dementia, transfers or recovery after a Kaweah Health or Sierra View discharge?
  • Which days and hours can you commit to through the harvest season, when your own family may need you?
  • Who covers if you are ill, and how much notice do you give?
  • What is your rate, and what changes it?
Schedules and cost

Typical schedules and what care costs in Tulare County

How the towns differ. Visalia has the county offices, the college and most of the likely caregivers; Tulare shares that pool; Porterville is far enough south-east to be a separate market; Dinuba families mostly want Spanish-speaking help and draw on Reedley and Cutler-Orosi too. The foothill cities rely on Visalia-based caregivers with cars. Post from your own town; the radius does the rest.

Postings here are mostly weekday blocks for an older parent while adult children work, respite for a relative who is the full-time carer, and dementia supervision. Agricultural schedules push some requests to early mornings and to the peak months; overnight requests usually follow a hospital stay. Live-in is uncommon.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

In Tulare County the IHSS rate ($17.50) is above the employed aide median ($16.50), so expect a private caregiver to start from the IHSS figure and go up for personal care, dementia, nights and driving; the $40 agency median is the statewide ceiling to compare against. When you hire directly you are a household employer: California personal attendants earn overtime after nine hours a day or 45 a week, and payroll taxes apply above the federal threshold.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Tulare County: frequently asked questions

How soon can I find a caregiver in Tulare County?

Your posting goes live immediately, but the platform is new here and has no local caregivers yet; the first profiles will follow the first postings, most likely in Visalia and Tulare.

Can my mother’s IHSS hours and a private caregiver run side by side?

Yes. IHSS covers the hours the county authorises; a private caregiver found here works the rest under a separate arrangement with you.

Which towns have their own family page?

Visalia, Tulare, Porterville and Dinuba, plus shorter pages for Exeter, Lindsay and Farmersville. Families in Woodlake, the Cutler-Orosi area, Three Rivers and the southern Highway 99 communities post from this page.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers?

No. You verify identity, references and history yourself; the hiring guide shows how. Caregivers may upload proof of a background check for a Verified badge, which staff review but do not independently run.

What does the site cost a family?

Creating an account, posting and receiving applications are free. Messaging a caregiver and confirming a hire are part of Family Premium ($24.99 a month, cancel any time). The site takes no cut of what you pay the caregiver.

¿Puedo publicar en español?

Sí. Escriba la publicación en el idioma que prefiera; casi la mitad del condado habla español en casa y muchos cuidadores lo indicarán en su perfil.
