How to find a caregiver in Exeter
Hiring in Exeter means planning around distance. Primary care is in town at the Kaweah Health Exeter Clinic (San Juan Avenue, open to 7 p.m. four days a week) and Family HealthCare Network on East Pine Street, but the emergency department, specialists and dialysis are in Visalia, 11.5 miles down Highway 198 or Highway 65, so most families write "must drive" into the posting. The caregivers who will answer are likely to live in Exeter, Farmersville or on the east side of Visalia; the platform has no profiles within 50 miles of Exeter yet, so your posting may be the first one a new local caregiver sees. A little over a quarter of Exeter residents speak Spanish at home, so ask for the language your parent prefers rather than assuming.

Types of in-home care families in Exeter arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Exeter
The credentials that exist locally are the state Home Care Aide Registry (voluntary for independents, so an absence is not a warning sign), IHSS provider enrolment through Tulare County, and the CNA certificate that College of the Sequoias graduates hold. Ask for two references from families, not employers, phone them, interview at your parent's kitchen table, and pay for two or three trial shifts before agreeing a schedule. Run a consumer-reporting background check yourself with the caregiver's written consent. CaregiverConnect does not run checks or vet the people who create profiles.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Will you drive my father to Kaweah Health in Visalia and wait with him, and what do you charge for the time and mileage?
- His doctor is at the Exeter Clinic on San Juan Avenue; can you manage the appointment and bring back the notes?
- Have you cared for someone with memory loss who wanders, and what did you do?
- Does he need to speak Spanish with you, or English?
- Which mornings can you commit to, and could you cover a weekend later?
- Are you enrolled with IHSS, or willing to enrol if he qualifies?
- What is your hourly rate, and is it different for overnight?
Typical schedules and what care costs in Exeter
Exeter postings tend to be weekday mornings for personal care and meals, appointment days with driving, respite afternoons for a son or daughter who works in Visalia, and occasional overnights after a discharge. Live-in requests are rare in a town where most older people own their homes outright.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Visalia metro (Tulare County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Tulare County | $17.50 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Independent caregivers quote their own rate; a figure between the $17.50 county IHSS wage and the $40 agency median is the usual range, with mileage to Visalia agreed separately. If your parent qualifies for Medi-Cal, IHSS can pay a caregiver you choose, including a relative, for authorised hours; apply through the county. You become a household employer when you hire directly, which means payroll taxes and California overtime after nine hours a day.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
