How to find an in-home caregiver in Strathmore
Older people in Strathmore rarely live on their own. The ACS 2020–2024 estimate counts 131 residents aged 65 and over in 626 households averaging 4.27 people, and among householders that age it finds 11 men and no women living alone. Care here usually means backing up a busy family: someone to bathe and dress a grandmother before the adults leave for work, cook lunch, keep her company and drive her to the doctor. Disability is common in this small group (81 of the 131 report one, a share with a wide margin), so ask for a caregiver who can help with transfers and walking, not only housework.
A useful Strathmore post names your relative's age and condition, the jobs to be done, which days, the start and finish times, any porch steps or a narrow bathroom, and the hourly rate you offer. In 60.4% of Strathmore homes, counting people five and up, Spanish is the household language, and close to half of them (47.2%) say their English falls short of "very well"; if Grandma speaks no English, put that in the first line. Answers may come from Strathmore itself or from Lindsay and Porterville, both within about seven road miles of Avenue 196; state whether the caregiver must bring a car.

Evaluating caregivers in Strathmore
Ask each candidate which of three local records applies to them. Tulare County IHSS providers were fingerprinted by the state and sat the county's required orientation before their first paycheck. Aides employed through a licensed agency are on the state registry kept by CDSS, and a name search shows them. Nurse aides with CDPH certification, the people Lindsay Gardens and similar homes employ, carry a number that the state's online lookup confirms. A neighbor with no paperwork can still be the right choice for a Strathmore family, so check what you can yourself: two references you call, a conversation about how they handled a fall or a bad night, and one paid trial day with a relative present. We at CaregiverConnect check no one's record and confirm no one's ID; a Strathmore family that wants a background report orders it independently, with the applicant's signed consent.

| IHSS provider wage, Tulare County | $17.50 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
For most Strathmore households the first call should be about IHSS. Public health coverage reaches 76.6% of residents in ACS 2020–2024, and half of households earn under $43,387 a year. Under CDSS rules, a Medi-Cal-eligible relative living in their own home can be assessed by Tulare County; approved hours are paid at $17.50 each to whichever provider the family picks, grandchildren included. Private hours are a different matter, because then your household is the employer. Strathmore has no local pay ordinance, and the Berkeley inventory shows none for the unincorporated county, so $16.90 is the floor; time-and-a-half starts for a personal attendant beyond nine hours on a single day or 45 over the week. Agencies charge well above either figure: CareScout puts the 2025 California median for non-medical help at home at $40.00 an hour.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring safely in Strathmore
Before the first visit, write down what the caregiver does, the shift times, the hourly and overtime rate, gas money for the clinic run, and how many days' notice ends the arrangement. A one-page hours sheet that both sides sign every Friday heads off arguments, and medicines, cash and bank cards should go somewhere locked. For an emergency, 911.
