How to find an in-home caregiver in Madera County

Start with where your relative lives. On the valley side, Madera, the Ranchos, Madera Acres and Chowchilla are close together along Highway 99, and caregivers can reach most addresses in a normal commute. The eastern foothills are another matter. Coarsegold, Oakhurst, Ahwahnee, Bass Lake and North Fork are older communities (ACS 2020–2024 counts 40.6% of North Fork residents at 65-plus), and a valley caregiver may not want the daily drive up Highway 41. For a hill address, offer fewer and longer shifts, a mileage allowance, or look for someone who already lives nearby.

Language matters across the county. Spanish is spoken at home by 42.7% of residents five and older, and 17.3% speak English less than very well, so put the language your parent relaxes in at the top of the posting. Caregiver profiles lower on this page are ordered by distance from your ZIP code and fill in as people sign up.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Madera County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Madera County

Some claims an applicant makes can be confirmed. Anyone already paid by Madera County IHSS went through Public Authority enrollment, which in this county means fingerprints sent to the Department of Justice, an orientation attended in person and two references. Agency-employed aides can be found by name in California's Home Care Aide Registry search, while an independent will be there only by choice. A CNA certificate comes from CDPH and an LVN license from the state BVNPT, and the county's own college trains LVNs in Madera. For everything else, rely on your own checks: call people who have employed the applicant, invite your parent to the interview, and pay for a first trial day before fixing a schedule. CaregiverConnect itself confirms no one's identity or history; if you want a consumer screening report, you order it with the applicant's signed permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Do you live on the valley floor or in the foothills, and how far will you drive to reach us?
  • Have you helped someone home from Madera Community Hospital or a Fresno hospital stay?
  • Have you finished Madera County IHSS enrollment, or would you be willing to start it?
  • By evening my mother only answers in Spanish. Could you work with that?
  • If snow or a road closure on Highway 41 kept you away, how would you let us know and who would cover?
  • Would you ride with my father on the county bus or drive him to appointments in your own car?
  • Have you managed transfers, bathing or incontinence care for someone who uses a walker or wheelchair?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Madera County: hourly rates and schedules

Madera and Chowchilla. Weekday morning or afternoon visits around adult children's work, often combined with a trip to the senior center lunch or a clinic. Ranchos and Madera Acres. Similar daytime blocks, with more driving. Oakhurst, Coarsegold and North Fork. Longer shifts, some overnight, so the caregiver is not on mountain roads twice a day.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Before naming a private rate, line it up against the $16.90 state minimum (UC Berkeley's ordinance list shows no Madera County city with its own), the $16.92 median for aides in EDD's Fresno MSA, which now includes Madera County, the county IHSS rate of $17.90 from July 1, 2026, and the $40 agency median CareScout reports for California. Dementia care, nights and long foothill drives justify paying above the IHSS figure. Long days (over nine hours) and long weeks (over 45) trigger overtime for a personal attendant, under the state's domestic worker law. Where Medi-Cal is in place, check IHSS eligibility with Adult Services first, because county-paid hours reduce what you need to buy privately.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Madera County: frequently asked questions

How do I apply for IHSS for a parent in Madera County?

Phone Adult Services on (559) 662-2600 or go in person to the Sunrise Avenue office in Madera. What does in-home care cost in Madera County?

Private caregivers set their own rates. The county IHSS rate ($17.90) and the $16.92 aide median in EDD's Fresno MSA figures are the usual starting points, with the CareScout agency median of $40 as the upper reference.

Is there help for my mother in Oakhurst who no longer drives?

The Eastern Madera County Senior Bus serves Oakhurst, Coarsegold, Bass Lake and Ahwahnee on weekdays for $1.50 a ride; book on 559-685-5555. The county bus to Madera also stops at Valley Children's and the Ranchos.

Where can a family caregiver get support?

Valley Caregiver Resource Center runs the Family Caregiver Support Program for Madera County with funding from the Fresno-Madera Area Agency on Aging, offering support groups, counseling and case management. Call (800) 541-8614.

Who do I call about suspected elder abuse?

Madera County APS, (559) 675-7839, 24 hours a day. For problems in a care facility, call the Fresno-Madera Ombudsman at (559) 224-9177.

Does CaregiverConnect screen the caregivers?

No. Screening is the family's job: we check no backgrounds, licenses or references. Posting a need is free of charge; Family Premium at $24.99 a month switches on messaging and hire confirmation, and caregivers never pay us a commission.
