How to find an in-home caregiver in Oakhurst

Oakhurst has about 6,100 residents in the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimate, and older adults are a large share of them: just over a quarter are 65 or older, and in roughly 400 homes someone of that age lives alone. As a result, many families here hire from a distance, perhaps an adult child in Fresno or farther away. If that is you, name a local contact who can let the caregiver in, give the address area and mention any stairs or a steep driveway, and list exactly what the caregiver will do on each visit.

Some caregivers who apply will live in Oakhurst; others may come up from the valley on the county bus or by car. State the hours plainly, mention whether you need someone who drives, and give an hourly rate. Should your parent feel more comfortable in Spanish, the home language of 13.8% of Oakhurst residents five and older, say so in the first line. The profile list lower on this page starts with caregivers nearest the ZIP in your search and grows as more sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Oakhurst

Check what can be checked. CNAs hold a CDPH certificate. Caregivers already paid through Madera County IHSS have completed Public Authority enrollment, including Department of Justice fingerprinting and references. Registry listing is compulsory only for agency employees, and no licensed home care agency in Oakhurst appears in the state's file, so expect mostly independent applicants. Then vet the person yourself: speak with two former employers, interview with your parent in the room (by video if you live away), and pay for a trial shift with someone you trust present. CaregiverConnect neither screens nor verifies caregivers, so a background report is a family decision that needs the applicant's signature.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which town do you live in, and what is your backup plan for reaching us on a day the roads are closed?
  • Can you take my mother to Camarena Health on Road 426, and wait with her?
  • Have you helped someone come home from a skilled nursing stay, such as at Majestic Mountain?
  • Is your name already on Madera County's IHSS provider list, and if not, would you enroll once she is approved?
  • Would you help her use the Senior Bus or the Medical Escort van on days you are not working?
  • How would you keep me updated if I live in Fresno or out of the area?
  • My mother has memory loss and sometimes refuses a bath. How would you approach that?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Oakhurst: hourly rates and schedules

Daily check-ins. A morning visit for a shower, breakfast and medications, and sometimes a short evening visit, for a parent who lives alone. Escort days. A caregiver who drives can handle trips to the clinics on Road 426 or to specialists in the valley; the county's Medical Escort van runs to Madera, Clovis and Fresno on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Overnight or long shifts. After a hospital or nursing home stay, or when memory loss makes nights unsafe.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Nothing in the UC Berkeley Labor Center's ordinance list covers unincorporated Madera County; an Oakhurst family hiring privately must pay at least $16.90, the state minimum. Useful reference points: EDD's median for aides in the Fresno MSA, which includes Madera County, was $16.92; Madera County IHSS pays providers $17.90 from July 1, 2026; and an agency visit runs $40 an hour at CareScout's California median. Long travel and overnight shifts are reasons to pay above the IHSS figure. Hours past nine in a day or 45 in a week are overtime for a personal attendant you employ. Median household income in Oakhurst is $82,056 (ACS 2020–2024); with Medi-Cal in place, check IHSS before anything else, either in Madera at (559) 662-2600 or at the Oakhurst office, (559) 395-0404.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
