How to find an in-home caregiver in Avenal

Avenal has no nursing home or licensed assisted living, so families here do the caregiving themselves or hire someone to come to the house. The census count is skewed by the state prison, but among ordinary homes ACS 2020–2024 finds 545 households with someone 65 or older, about one household in five, and 108 older residents living alone. Close to half of older residents outside institutions (45.8%) report a disability. A part-time job in Avenal suits someone who lives in town far better than someone who would have to drive in.

Plan for Spanish. It is the home language of three Avenal residents in four, and one in three speaks English less than very well, so write the post in Spanish or in both languages if your relative prefers it. Mention any driving: most Avenal workers drive alone or carpool, and the town has no bus commuters at all in the survey, so a caregiver without a car can do housework and personal care but not errands. Caregiver profiles on this page are listed by distance from the ZIP code you search.

Call two former employers or families, interview with your relative present, and pay for one trial shift before you commit. CaregiverConnect does no screening: no identity, criminal record or reference checks. If you want a background report, ask the applicant to sign a consent form and order it yourself.

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Avenal: hourly rates and schedules

Daytime while the family works. Many Avenal households need cover from early morning to mid-afternoon on weekdays. Short morning visits. For a parent who lives alone, an hour or two for washing, breakfast and medicines can be enough. Trip days. When a relative has a specialist or hospital appointment out of town, families often book a longer day with a caregiver who drives, so agree mileage in advance.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's ordinance list shows no Avenal minimum wage, so you must pay a directly hired caregiver at least California's $16.90 an hour. For comparison, Kings County IHSS pays $17.50, county aides had a $16.50 BLS median in May 2025, and CareScout puts statewide agency home care at $40. With a median household income of $54,741 in Avenal, IHSS is worth checking before you pay privately: Kings County IHSS, on (559) 852-4467, covers people who are 65-plus, blind or disabled and who meet the SSI/SSP tests, with some income flexibility. An attendant you employ earns overtime from the tenth hour of a day or the 46th hour of a week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
