Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Santa Clara County
Santa Clara County is a long valley, and caregivers tend to work the part of it they live in. The north county cities along the Bay (Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Milpitas, plus Los Altos and Cupertino) form one cluster. San Jose, home to 980,434 of the 1,932,468 people the Department of Finance counted countywide in January 2026, is a market of its own. The West Valley towns of Campbell, Los Gatos and Saratoga sit against the hills on the southwest side, and the South County cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy, with the unincorporated community of San Martin between them, lie down Monterey Road. Another 91,499 people live outside any city.
Your profile should say which of those parts you can reach on a weekday morning. Put in the ZIP code you leave from, a radius you would really drive, and whether you rely on VTA buses and light rail. Language is the other big filter. The 2020–2024 ACS finds English is not the home language for 55.2% of people five or older in the county; Spanish accounts for 17.1% of them all, Chinese languages 10.6%, Vietnamese 6.6% and Tagalog 2.6%. Clients who are more comfortable in one of those languages are common, so list every one you speak and how well.

Types of caregiver jobs in Santa Clara County
Families here commonly ask for morning help with bathing and dressing, someone to drive a parent to appointments and stay through them, company for an older person who lives alone while relatives work, and extra hands for the weeks after a hospital stay. Without a work history, companionship, meals and errands are the realistic start; the free IHSS classes described below are an inexpensive way to build a record.
- Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
- Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
- Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
- Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
- Overnight: supervision through the night.
- Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Caregiver pay in Santa Clara County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties) | $18.09 median ($18.92 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 49,610 jobs; concentration 1.58× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Santa Clara County | $20.44 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties) | $27.33 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The May 2025 BLS survey found 49,610 home health and personal care aides working in the metro area, at a $18.09 median and a $18.92 mean, while nursing assistants earned a $27.33 median, a gap that makes CNA training worth weighing here. The county IHSS rate of $20.44, raised by 40 cents on January 1, 2026, sits above the aide median. Seven cities set their own minimum wages, all adjusted on January 1, 2026 in the UC Berkeley Labor Center's table: Mountain View $19.70, Sunnyvale $19.50, Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Cupertino and Los Altos $18.70, and San Jose $18.45; Milpitas moved to $18.50 on July 1, 2026. The state's $16.90 governs everywhere else, including Gilroy, Morgan Hill, the three West Valley towns and unincorporated land. Agencies with staff in the city-ordinance cities must meet those local floors; whether an ordinance reaches a private household employer depends on its wording, so ask the city before you rely on it.

Santa Clara County in numbers
The 2020–2024 ACS puts 282,010 county residents at 65 or older, 14.8% of the population, with 38,846 aged 85 or more. It is an expensive place to live: median household income is $164,281, median gross rent $2,857 a month and a typical owner-occupied house is worth $1,490,600 by the ACS median. Many caregivers therefore live where rents are lower and travel to clients elsewhere in the valley, so an honest commuting radius matters. Active IHSS providers can ask the Public Authority's benefits line, (408) 350-3290, for a VTA SmartPass valid on local buses and light rail across the county.
Short assignments often follow a hospital stay. The state's HCAI database shows Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (628 licensed beds), Good Samaritan, O'Connor, Regional Medical Center and Kaiser in San Jose, Kaiser Santa Clara (343) on Lawrence Expressway, Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto and El Camino Hospital Los Gatos (143). Neighboring hubs: Alameda County across the Bay and San Mateo County to the north.
