Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Mateo County

San Mateo County has twenty cities and a ridge down the middle. Most of its 748,182 residents live on the bayside, in a chain of cities along El Camino Real, Highway 101 and Interstate 280: Daly City, Colma and Brisbane against the San Francisco line; South San Francisco, San Bruno and Millbrae just south of them; Burlingame, San Mateo, Foster City, Belmont and San Carlos in the middle; Redwood City, Menlo Park, Atherton and East Palo Alto at the south end. The coastside, Pacifica and Half Moon Bay with the unincorporated villages around them, is a separate trip over the hills. SamTrans paratransit is split the same way: Redi-Wheels on the bay, RediCoast on the coast.

So treat the county as two or three markets and say which one you serve. Enter your home ZIP code and a rush-hour radius you can honestly keep; somebody in Daly City who also accepts Menlo Park is promising a long run down 280 every day. Languages count for a lot here. The 2020–2024 American Community Survey finds a language other than English spoken at home by 45.8% of residents aged five and over, Spanish by 17.6% and an Asian or Pacific Islander language by 19.9%. Every language you can work in belongs in the opening lines of your profile.

Typical requests are weekday help for a parent who still owns the family house, recovery care after a stay at Mills-Peninsula, Seton, Sequoia or one of the two Kaiser hospitals, company and supervision for someone with dementia, and a few hours a week of relief for a spouse. Pay

Caregiver pay in San Mateo County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Local wage law matters more here than in most of California. In the minimum wage table UC Berkeley's Labor Center updated for July 2026, eleven cities and the unincorporated county carry 2026 rates, all effective January 1, ranging from $17.50 (Daly City) up to $18.95 (Belmont), with Redwood City at $18.65, San Mateo $18.60 and the unincorporated areas $17.95. Pacifica, San Bruno, Millbrae, Hillsborough, Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, Colma and Brisbane are not on the list, so California's $16.90 is the floor there. These ordinances bind employers; whether one reaches a household that hires you directly depends on its wording, so ask the city. IHSS pays $21.70, with $32.55 for overtime, above every local floor and above the $17.28 median for aides across the five-county metro, which makes it the figure to quote when you set a private rate.

How to enroll as a provider in San Mateo County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Mateo County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Mateo County

No state license is required to assist a senior at home when the work involves no nursing tasks. Any aide an agency employs must be on the state aide registry; independents may choose whether to pay $35 for a two-year registration. IHSS in this county is run by San Mateo County Health's Aging and Disability Services, and its IHSS Public Authority handles provider enrollment, payroll and the registry from an office at 2000 Alameda de las Pulgas, Suite 200. You bring an original Social Security card and an unexpired government photo ID, complete the packet, watch the mandatory orientation video and pass a background check; registry applicants also attend a registry orientation. Suspected abuse should be reported on 844-868-0938, a county line staffed day and night. Statewide rules are collected in our requirements guide, and our guide to IHSS in San Mateo County walks through enrollment step by step.

The area

San Mateo County in numbers

By the Department of Finance's count there were 748,182 residents on January 1, 2026, about 61,900 of them in unincorporated areas. According to ACS 2020–2024, 17.8% of the population is 65 or older, 7.8% is 75 or older and 18,205 people are past 85; one household in three (33.3%) includes someone over 65, and 28.4% of older residents report a disability. Housing explains a lot about the local market. Median household income is $158,855, median gross rent $2,922 and the typical owner-occupied home is worth $1,559,600, so many families can pay privately while many caregivers commute in from cheaper parts of the county or from across the bay.

Neighboring markets are covered on the San Francisco page and the Santa Clara County page.
