Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Sunnyvale
Sunnyvale had 161,884 residents on January 1, 2026, by the state Department of Finance count. According to ACS 2020–2024, 19,985 of them are 65 or older (13.0%), 3,028 are 85 or older, and 13,711 households, a little under a quarter, include at least one person past 65. Half of all residents were born outside the United States, about three quarters of those in Asia, and 60.5% of residents five and older use another language at home. For a caregiver that changes what belongs at the top of a profile: the languages you can use with a client, and any experience cooking the food or following the customs a client grew up with, can count for as much as years in the job.
Most care here takes place in single-family homes and apartment complexes spread across the 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089 ZIP codes. Close to three in ten working residents (29.2%) work from home, so a shift may happen with an adult son or daughter on video calls in the next room. If you are used to working quietly and on your own around a busy household, say so. Tell families exactly which days and hours you have open, whether you can transport a client in your own car,, and how long your commute into the city takes. Caregiver pay in Sunnyvale: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, CA metro (Santa Clara and San Benito counties) | $18.09 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 49,610 jobs; concentration 1.58× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Santa Clara County | $20.44 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The city's wage floor went from $19.00 to $19.50 on January 1, 2026, and adjusts it every year using the regional Consumer Price Index. Sunnyvale's page says the rate applies to anyone who performs two or more hours of work a week in the city, regardless of immigration status, and that employers must keep hour records for four years and give you their name, address and phone number in writing when they hire you. So the Sunnyvale rate runs $2.60 over the state figure and $1.41 over $18.09, the metro's BLS median for aides in home health and personal care. The city's page does not say whether a household employing a caregiver directly is covered; the Economic Development Division at 408-730-7902 answers wage questions free and in confidence. Santa Clara County IHSS pays $20.44, only 94 cents more than the city floor.
How to enroll as a provider in Santa Clara County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Santa Clara County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Sunnyvale
Sunnyvale adds no licensing rules of its own. Working for a family as an independent, non-medical caregiver needs no license, and the Home Care Aide Registry becomes compulsory only when a licensed agency puts you on its payroll. A CDPH nurse assistant certificate is the requirement for skilled nursing settings and clinical tasks. IHSS pay starts only after Public Authority Services by Sourcewise has enrolled you (enrollment line (408) 350-3252), which takes online forms and state videos, a group orientation in San Jose, an in-person appointment with your original Social Security card, and a Department of Justice fingerprint check. Your client, or their authorized representative, must then name you as provider through the IHSS Electronic Services Portal or on the SOC 426A form, or no timesheets arrive. Report suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services, (408) 975-4900. More detail: California requirements guide.

Caregiver jobs in Sunnyvale: frequently asked questions
What is Sunnyvale's minimum wage in 2026?
$19.50 an hour since January 1, 2026, up from $19.00 in 2025. The city recalculates it every January from regional inflation.
Does the Sunnyvale rate apply if I live somewhere else?
Coverage follows the job location, not your home address. Two hours or more of work a week in Sunnyvale is enough, and immigration status makes no difference.
Who do I call if a Sunnyvale employer pays me less than $19.50?
Raise it with the employer first, then call the City of Sunnyvale Economic Development Division at 408-730-7902. The city says its services are free and confidential and that retaliation for a complaint is unlawful.
How much does fingerprinting cost for IHSS in Santa Clara County?
Between $12 and $30 when you use the LiveScan form Public Authority Services gives you at your in-person appointment. Results from an earlier, unrelated scan are not accepted.
Which hospitals are closest to Sunnyvale?
El Camino Health on Grant Road in Mountain View and Kaiser Permanente on Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara. Knowing the routes and parking at both helps with appointment and discharge work.
Can I take a Sunnyvale client to the Senior Center?
Yes. The center on Remington Drive serves adults 50 and over and runs a reservation-only lunch that does not need a membership. Front desk: 408-730-7360.
