How to find an in-home caregiver in San Luis Obispo County
Start with the part of the county your relative lives in. North County (Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero), the city of San Luis Obispo, the North Coast (Los Osos, Morro Bay, Cayucos, Cambria) and the Five Cities in the south (Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Oceano, Nipomo) are far enough apart that a caregiver rarely crosses the whole county for a short shift. More than 119,000 residents live outside any city, according to the Department of Finance, so if your parent is on a rural road, say so, offer mileage, and consider fewer but longer shifts.
About one county resident in eight speaks Spanish at home (13.0% of those five and older in ACS 2020–2024); if your relative is more at ease in Spanish, lead the post with that. Profiles below are ranked nearest-first from whatever ZIP you type, and new caregivers are added as they sign up; type the ZIP of the home that needs care rather than yours.

- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in San Luis Obispo County
Some credentials here can be confirmed. Anyone working as an IHSS provider in San Luis Obispo County was fingerprinted through Live Scan and cleared by the state Justice Department during Public Authority enrollment, and people on the county Caregiver Registry were further approved for referrals. Home care agencies may only send aides listed on the state aide registry, which independents can also join. Nursing assistants carry CDPH certification; Cuesta College teaches the course. Beyond paperwork, call two former employers, include your relative when you interview, and pay for a single trial shift before settling on hours. CaregiverConnect screens no one, so a background report, ordered with the applicant's signed permission, is your call.
Questions families here ask at interview
- From which town would you commute, and how long does it take at 8 a.m.?
- Have you cared for people coming home from Sierra Vista, French Hospital, Twin Cities or Marian in Arroyo Grande?
- Are you an enrolled IHSS provider or on the county Caregiver Registry?
- My mother sometimes prefers Spanish; are you comfortable switching?
- Would you go with my father on Runabout or the Senior Go shuttle, or drive him yourself for mileage?
- What would you do if the power went out or the road closed while you were with my parent?
- Do you charge more for Saturdays, Sundays or a night shift?

| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, San Luis Obispo–Paso Robles metro (San Luis Obispo County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, San Luis Obispo County | $21.40 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Four reference points: California's $16.90 minimum, which applies everywhere in this county because no city here has its own ordinance; the $16.50 median and $17.65 mean for employed aides in the county in May 2025 (measured before the January 2026 state minimum took effect); the $21.40 the county pays IHSS providers; and the $40 hourly median CareScout reports for California agencies. Private hires in the county tend to land somewhere in the gap between what IHSS pays and what agencies charge. IHSS can cover hours for full-scope Medi-Cal members who are elderly, blind or disabled, so ask about eligibility first: call the Atascadero office at (805) 461-6110 or Arroyo Grande at (805) 474-2103. Budget for overtime as well, owed to personal attendants beyond 9 daily or 45 weekly hours under the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in San Luis Obispo County: frequently asked questions
How does my parent apply for IHSS in San Luis Obispo County?
Phone the Atascadero office, (805) 461-6110, or Arroyo Grande, (805) 474-2103, weekdays 8 to 5, or use the county's online form. The county cannot authorize hours until it has the SOC 873 health certification from a doctor; a social worker then visits the home to assess needs.
Will the county help us find an IHSS caregiver?
Yes. After approval, the IHSS social worker can request names from the Public Authority Caregiver Registry on your behalf. The recipient is the employer: you interview, hire, supervise and, if needed, replace the provider.
Is there free respite for family caregivers here?
Hospice SLO County sends trained volunteers into homes for in-home respite and care management at no charge, for people facing a life-limiting illness or end of life. Senior Connection, (805) 842-5148, can point you to other caregiver support.
How can my mother get to appointments without driving?
The Senior Go shuttle gives door-to-door rides to anyone 65 or older anywhere in the county on weekdays. If a disability keeps her off regular buses, apply for ADA certification and use Runabout, booked up to a week ahead.
Does CaregiverConnect vet caregivers?
No. Profiles are self-reported and nobody at CaregiverConnect calls references or orders reports, so screening stays with your family. Publishing a request costs nothing; to message applicants and confirm a hire, a family pays $24.99 a month for Premium.
My father lives near Cambria. Will anyone come that far?
Post with his own ZIP code so North Coast caregivers see it first, offer mileage, and consider longer shifts on set days, which make the trip up the coast worthwhile for someone from Morro Bay or Los Osos.
