How to find an in-home caregiver in Daly City

Care in Daly City usually happens in a full house. The average household has 3.10 people, and 16.6% of residents live with relatives beyond a spouse or child, often a grandparent in a home where the working adults leave early for their jobs. What families tend to need is a dependable person for the hours when everyone else is out: help with breakfast and medication, a walk, lunch in the right language, and someone home when a parent who has started to wander gets restless in the afternoon.

Write the posting the way you would brief a relative. Give the ZIP code (94014 or 94015), the days and hours, whether there are stairs to manage, and the language your parent prefers. Tagalog is spoken at home by 19,736 residents and Chinese by 15,111, and thousands in each group are more at ease outside English, so name the language and dialect in the first sentence. Caregivers living around Daly City can then reply; the profiles shown above change as people near you register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Daly City

Ask for proof of whatever a candidate claims. Agency aides must be listed on California's Home Care Aide Registry; for an independent caregiver a listing is voluntary but shows they passed the state background check that comes with it. A certified nursing assistant should be able to show a current CDPH certificate. An IHSS provider will have enrolled with San Mateo County, which includes an orientation and a background check. Beyond that, do the checking yourself. Hold the interview in the house, let your parent lead part of it in their own language, phone two families the candidate has worked for, get written consent for a background screen from a company you pick, and book one paid day before you settle on regular hours. No one at CaregiverConnect checks backgrounds or vets applicants.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Can you talk with my lola in Tagalog through a whole day, including about her medicines?
  • Has any client of yours come home from Seton Medical Center, and what did they need in the first week?
  • How would you get here: car, BART to the Daly City station, or bus?
  • Our house has stairs inside. How would you help my father on them safely?
  • Would you take my mother to the Daly City Health Center on 90th Street and stay with her?
  • What would you do if my grandmother refuses to eat or take her pills?
  • Could I see your aide registry listing, nursing assistant certificate, or IHSS enrollment letter?
  • How much do you charge per hour Monday to Friday, and more for nights or weekends?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Daly City: hourly rates and schedules

The common pattern here is weekday daytime cover from about 7 or 8 a.m. until the working adults return, Monday to Friday, with relatives taking evenings and weekends. Other families post split shifts (a morning bath and an evening bedtime routine), short-term help for the weeks after a hospital discharge, or one or two overnights a week so a relative can sleep.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Daly City's own minimum wage, $17.50 since January 1, 2026, is higher than the $16.90 state rate shown above. Daly City's page describes the rule in terms of businesses and companies, so a household employing someone directly should check with City Hall or simply pay at least $17.50. Caregivers who know the area will compare any offer with San Mateo County's $21.70 IHSS rate, so families who pay privately usually land between that and agency prices, with more for nights or heavy personal care. If your live-out caregiver works long days, California's domestic worker overtime rule requires time and a half for hours over nine in a workday and over 45 in a workweek.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Daly City: frequently asked questions

Can I find a caregiver in Daly City who speaks Tagalog?

Put Tagalog in the title of your posting. It is the most widely spoken language after English in Daly City homes, so caregivers who share it are likely to notice. Ask during the interview whether they can also handle medical terms in it.

What hourly rate should we offer in Daly City?

At least the city minimum of $17.50. Experienced caregivers will measure your offer against the $21.70 San Mateo County pays IHSS providers, and against the $26.96 metro median for certified nursing assistants if they hold that certificate.

Can our family get paid for caring for Lola?

Once the county authorizes IHSS hours for her under full-scope Medi-Cal, she can hire a relative as her provider. Call 650-573-3900 to start; the San Mateo County IHSS guide explains each step.

What if my father can no longer drive to appointments?

If a disability keeps him off the bus, SamTrans Redi-Wheels offers pre-booked paratransit for $4.25 a ride. A caregiver can ride with him or meet him at Seton or the clinic on 90th Street.

Where can I get help as a family caregiver myself?

Peninsula Family Service runs a resource line for residents 60 and over, and Daly City's senior centers run activities that give relatives a few hours off. The city's senior hotline is (650) 991-8012.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers before they apply?

No. Profiles are written by the caregivers themselves, so treat each one as a starting point and do the registry lookup, references and screening before you hire.
