Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Oakland

The Department of Finance put Oakland at 429,591 residents on January 1, 2026, and private care here happens in apartments near downtown as often as in houses in the hills. Most homes are rented (57.7% in the 2020–2024 ACS), and 18,459 households are a person 65 or older living alone. Many of those clients want to stay put, and a few hours of help each day is what makes that possible. Requests posted with ZIP codes from 94601 to 94621 appear above as families publish them.

Getting around shapes who gets hired. In 16.2% of Oakland households nobody has a vehicle, and 12.5% of working residents ride transit to their jobs, so families often need a caregiver who can go with a parent on AC Transit or meet an East Bay Paratransit van, or one who drives and can do the clinic run. State in your profile how you travel and which neighborhoods you can reach. Language helps too: 40.3% of Oaklanders past age four speak another language at home, 22.6% speak Spanish, and 27.5% of Oaklanders were born outside the country. Any language you use with confidence belongs in the first line of your profile.

Types of caregiver jobs in Oakland

Oakland families mostly ask for weekday personal care and meals, rides and company on medical visits, overnight cover once a patient is back from the hospital, and steady hours with a client who has dementia. Newcomers usually start with companionship, shopping, cooking and housekeeping. If you want IHSS work, the Public Authority's free classes are open once you are enrolled as a provider, and Merritt College's clinical medical assisting certificate is a local option if you want formal clinical training.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Oakland: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Nursing assistants, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties)$26.96 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Oakland's minimum wage, set by Measure FF and Municipal Code section 5.92, is $17.34 an hour for 2026, 44 cents above California's $16.90. The city's official notice says it covers any part-time or full-time employee who puts in two or more hours of work in a workweek within Oakland, and it rises every January 1 with the CPI for urban wage earners in the San Francisco–Oakland–San Jose area. Employers who break it face civil penalties of up to $1,000 per violation. The notice speaks of employees and employers without singling out households, so if a family pays you directly, ask the city whether you are covered. Within the metro, home health and personal care aides had a $17.28 median and an $18.66 mean in May 2025, and Alameda County IHSS pays $22.10, so IHSS is the stronger benchmark for pricing private work. Nursing assistants in the metro earned a $26.96 median.

How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Oakland

Families in Oakland can hire you for non-medical help without any state license. Every aide on a licensed agency's payroll needs the state's $35 aide registration; independent aides may sign up on their own. IHSS in Oakland runs through the county, and so do the steps: the mandatory 90-minute IHSS orientation offered by Adult and Aging Services, the provider enrollment agreement, DOJ Live Scan fingerprints and two matching IDs. The county IHSS office and the Public Authority share 6955 Foothill Blvd., Suite 143, which is also where payroll questions can be raised in person; the payroll line is 510-577-1877, and the union, SEIU 2015, answers 1-855-810-2015. Hospital and skilled nursing jobs require CDPH nursing assistant certification. You are a mandated reporter; the county's Adult Protective Services line, 1-866-CALL-APS, never closes. Statewide rules: California requirements guide.
