How to find an in-home caregiver in Martinez

One Martinez household in three (32.7%, or 4,817 of 14,723 in ACS 2020–2024) has a member aged 65 or older, and roughly 1,635 older residents keep house on their own. Many of their adult children still go out to work: 64.3% of Martinez commuters drive alone, while 22.3% work from home and may only need a second pair of hands at set times. Write your post around those gaps. Say which mornings or afternoons you cannot cover, what has to happen in them (a shower, breakfast, pills, a ride to Alhambra Avenue for a clinic visit, lunch at the senior center), and whether the job will grow.

After English, Spanish leads among home languages, at 9.0% of residents aged five and up; Chinese (3.2%) and Filipino (2.8%) residents are the largest Asian groups in the city. Name your parent's strongest language in the opening sentence. Next, say whose car is used for outings: only 3.9% of Martinez households have no vehicle, so most errands depend on one. Evaluating caregivers in Martinez

Credentials in Martinez come in three kinds, and each can be checked. Nursing assistants certified by CDPH carry a certificate number and an expiry date you can look up. An agency aide must hold a state Home Care Aide Registry listing (the only licensed agency in town, per CDSS, is on Main Street); independents can register but do not have to. Providers on the Contra Costa IHSS registry were fingerprinted through Live Scan for a state Justice Department check and interviewed by Public Authority staff. Then do the legwork yourself. Ring a pair of former employers, seat your parent at the final interview, and treat the first paid visit as a trial with a relative nearby. CaregiverConnect runs no screening or background checks of its own. A record check is something your family arranges, after the applicant agrees to it in writing.

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Martinez: hourly rates and schedules

Before work. An early block, two to four hours, for waking, washing, dressing and breakfast while an adult child heads out. Green Street lunch days. Pickup late in the morning, Café Costa at the senior center, then home. After a discharge. Visits every day when your parent first comes home from the hospital, fewer each week as recovery goes on. Weekend cover. A Saturday or Sunday booking so the relative doing most of the work gets a break.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Martinez has no local wage law in UC Berkeley's ordinance inventory, so $16.90, the statewide minimum, is the least a household employer may pay per hour. Set against that: a $17.28 metro-wide aide median from BLS (May 2025), the $20.03 Contra Costa pays IHSS providers, and CareScout's 2025 statewide agency median of $40.00 an hour. Become the employer of a personal attendant and California's domestic worker overtime kicks in at hour ten of a day, or hour 46 of a week. Check IHSS first, though. Contra Costa's rules say the person must qualify for Medi-Cal, live at home, and be 65-plus, blind or permanently disabled; applications go to (925) 229-8434, and after a doctor completes form SOC 873 a county social worker comes to the house.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
