How to find an in-home caregiver in Pittsburg

Write one free post under ZIP code 94565 that says which days and hours you need, what your parent can and cannot do alone, and which language they speak most easily. Anyone whose service radius reaches you may reply, and new Pittsburg-area profiles are listed below the post as they sign up. Expect applicants from Pittsburg and the other East County towns; ask what each person would do to get to you on a day their car breaks down.

Language is worth stating plainly. Per ACS 2020–2024, 49.8% of Pittsburg residents past their fifth birthday mainly use a non-English language at home (31.4% use Spanish), and about four in ten of the Spanish speakers have limited English. If your father is happiest in Spanish, or your mother speaks another language at home, put it in the title of the post. Note any front steps, any walker or wheelchair, and whether your parent gets care at Kaiser or Sutter Delta in Antioch, since those appointments shape the schedule.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Pittsburg

Ask applicants which of these they hold and check each one. A Contra Costa IHSS provider has enrolled with the county Public Authority, completed orientation and been fingerprinted. Only agency employees have to join the state aide registry; directly hired caregivers may not be on it. CDPH grants CNA certificates to people who pass an approved program and exam, the 16-week evening course at Pittsburg Adult Education Center being the local one. After that, phone two past clients or employers, include your parent at the table, obtain signed permission before any background report, then try a short paid trial ahead of any long schedule. CaregiverConnect leaves every check to the family and does not vet the people who apply.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How long does your commute to our Pittsburg house take for a 7 am start?
  • Mom talks mainly in Spanish. Could you chat with her in Spanish across a whole shift?
  • Have you helped someone home from Kaiser Antioch or Sutter Delta? What did you do in the first week?
  • Can you show me an IHSS provider number, CNA certificate or aide registry listing I can look up?
  • Could you drive Dad to the Café Costa lunch on Presidio Lane and wait to bring him back?
  • With all of us at work, how would you keep a parent with memory loss safe during the day?
  • What do you charge for a ten-hour weekday, and what changes for weekends or overnight?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Pittsburg: hourly rates and schedules

Pittsburg posts commonly ask for weekday shifts of eight to eleven hours that line up with a relative's commute, morning visits for bathing and breakfast, evening help with dinner and bedtime, and a few weeks of daily cover after a hospital stay. Families caring for a parent alone sometimes book one or two weekend days so the main family caregiver gets a break.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Pittsburg uses California's 2026 minimum of $16.90 an hour, with no city rate above it. Most caregivers will compare your offer with the $20.03 Contra Costa IHSS rate, and the CareScout 2025 survey puts the California agency median at $40.00 an hour, so a direct hire usually lands between those figures, higher for dementia care, heavy transfers or driving. A long weekday shift can push a caregiver past nine hours, the point where California personal attendants earn overtime (also after 45 hours in a week). For a parent on Medi-Cal, ring (925) 229-8434 to request IHSS before you commit to private pay; county-approved hours may go to a helper your parent names, a relative among them.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
