Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Hercules
Hercules began as a company town. The city's history page says plant managers of the California Powder Works incorporated it on December 15, 1900, around a dynamite plant; the first housing subdivisions followed in 1975, and the page calls the city the fastest growing suburb in California in the 1980s. ACS 2020–2024 counts 5,291 Hercules residents aged 65 or more, and 3,783 of the city's 9,355 households (40.4%) include at least one of them.
The licensed employers inside the city are small. In the state's community care licensing file of May 25, 2025, 94547 has four licensed elder care homes (RCFEs) holding 26 beds, three licensed for six residents and one for eight, plus six adult residential facilities with 60 beds, the largest a 30-bed program on Alfred Nobel Drive. No home care organization held a license in Hercules on that date; one application was pending. CDPH's facility list, dated October 16, 2026, adds the one medical-model employer in town: Blize Healthcare, a licensed home health agency, and its sister office Hospice by Blize Healthcare, both in suites at 750 Alfred Nobel Drive. CDPH shows no hospital and no nursing home in 94547, so shift work in a nursing home means a trip to facilities such as Vale Healthcare Center in San Pablo (202 beds) or Shields Richmond Nursing Center (84).
Language is the detail most worth putting in a Hercules profile. Among Hercules residents five or older, 45.5% talk at home in a language that is not English, and 21.8% in an Asian or Pacific Island language. Filipino residents make up 21.6% of the city's population, so a caregiver who speaks Tagalog or Ilocano with an older client should say so in the first line, along with the hours and neighborhoods you can cover.

Types of caregiver jobs in Hercules
Expect posts for weekday help during a working family's office hours: getting up and dressed, a shower, lunch, pills on time and a ride. The Hercules Senior Center serves Café Costa lunches every weekday from 11:30, and plenty of clients would like to be there for the meal or the morning tai chi class; drop-off and pick-up there is a simple first job. If you are new to paid care, a six-bed home is a realistic place to start, and companionship visits for someone living alone are another: ACS estimates 842 Hercules residents over 65 live by themselves, 656 of them women.

Caregiver pay in Hercules: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 119,120 jobs; concentration 1.81× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Contra Costa County | $20.03 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
About 4.5% of Hercules's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. Hercules sits slightly below the county figure of 4.7% and below the statewide 5.3%, with a labor force near 14,000. What matters more for care work is the pay on offer. No Hercules ordinance appears in the wage inventory kept by UC Berkeley's Labor Center (its September 30, 2026 update), so every Hercules employer works from California's $16.90. El Cerrito, another Contra Costa city, does have its own ordinance at $18.82 for 2026, but it covers work done inside El Cerrito only. A Hercules IHSS client, like any in Contra Costa, brings the provider $20.03 hourly; enrollment, step by step, is in our Contra Costa IHSS walkthrough.
The BLS median of $17.28 pools five counties, including San Francisco, so treat it as a regional marker. Local incomes are well above it: the city's ACS median household income is $129,397, and 79.2% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Rents are steep for a caregiver who wants to live nearby, with a median gross rent of $2,991. Personal attendants whom a Hercules household employs directly earn overtime once a day's work runs beyond nine hours or a week's beyond 45; agree how that is handled before any long live-in stretch.
How to enroll as a provider in Contra Costa County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Contra Costa County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Hercules
California does not license a caregiver who works privately for one Hercules family on non-medical tasks. Agency work adds a step: an aide on the payroll of a licensed home care organization must hold an entry on California's Home Care Aide Registry, which carries a $35 application fee. Because no home care organization was licensed in Hercules in the May 2025 file, an agency job will usually come from an office elsewhere in the county. For home health or hospice work, ask an agency such as Blize Healthcare which certificate it requires before you apply. For IHSS pay, enroll with Contra Costa's IHSS Public Authority on (800) 333-1081. Getting onto its registry takes a written application, an in-person interview with staff, checks on your references, Live Scan prints and two orientations, and the registry's West County specialist post was listed as vacant this month. Paid and unpaid carers alike count as mandated reporters of abuse against an elder or dependent adult (Welfare and Institutions Code §15630), and Contra Costa APS answers at any hour on (925) 229-8434. Details are in our California caregiver requirements guide.

Hercules in numbers
The city of 26,323 (DOF, January 2026) is older than the Bay Area suburbs that grew up around the same time: its median age is 43.9 in ACS 2020–2024, 20.1% of residents are 65 or over and 470 are 85-plus; one in four over-65s (25.2%) reports a disability. The population is diverse: 44.1% of residents are Asian, including 21.6% Filipino, 5.8% Chinese and 5.7% Asian Indian; 18.3% are Black; 14.5% are Hispanic or Latino; and 14.4% are non-Hispanic white.
Detached houses make up 57.9% of the housing units. Most working residents drive, 62.9% alone, while 9.1% take transit and 19.0% work from home; the average trip to work is 37.6 minutes. Just 4.1% of households lack a vehicle, so a client's own car is usually there, and a caregiver insured to drive it is useful. Kaiser Permanente's Richmond campus on Nevin Avenue is a licensed hospital employer outside the city. Neighboring pages: Rodeo, Richmond, El Cerrito and Benicia.

No. EDD's estimates average about 4.5% over the 12 months through August 2026, under the county's 4.7% and the state's 5.3%.
Does Hercules have its own minimum wage?
No. The Labor Center inventory has no Hercules ordinance, so California's $16.90 is the floor. El Cerrito's $18.82 applies only to hours worked within El Cerrito.
What does IHSS pay for a Hercules client?

Can I get CNA training close to Hercules this year?
Not at Contra Costa College, whose San Pablo program is paused until at least spring 2027. Look further afield for a course, and meanwhile apply for private or IHSS work, which needs no certificate.
