How to find an in-home caregiver in Fair Oaks

Fair Oaks is an older community than most in the county. The ACS 2020–2024 estimate counts 8,236 residents aged 65 and up, a quarter of the population, including 962 aged 85 or more, and roughly 1,880 older residents who live by themselves. When you write the post, picture the caregiver reading it on a phone: lead with the hours and days, then the tasks in order (help out of bed, a shower, breakfast, pills, a walk, a drive to the doctor), then the pay. Mention stairs, pets and whether your parent smokes, because those decide who applies.

About 17.6% of Fair Oaks residents five and older speak another language at home, and other Indo-European languages are more common than Spanish (8.3% against 6.0%). If your father prefers a language besides English, say which one. Caregiver profiles that cover 95628 appear above and change as people join or update their travel area.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Fair Oaks

Ask each finalist which credentials they hold, then check them. CDPH runs an online verification page for nursing assistant certificates, which shows only active, denied, revoked or suspended ones. Agency staff must appear on the state Home Care Aide Registry; two home care organizations in 95628 hold CDSS licenses, Homewatch Caregivers of Folsom among them, if you prefer an agency that handles payroll and scheduling. A current Sacramento County IHSS provider has passed the Public Authority's Live Scan fingerprinting. Beyond paperwork, phone at least two past employers, ask what they did the last time a client fell or became agitated at dusk, and book a paid half-day trial while you are home. CaregiverConnect does not run background checks; any check you order needs the applicant's written consent.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Because Fair Oaks is unincorporated and Sacramento County has no ordinance in the UC Berkeley Labor Center's list, California's $16.90 hourly minimum is the floor for any caregiver you employ. CareScout's 2025 survey puts California's median for agency non-medical home care at $40 hourly, and Sacramento County IHSS pays providers $19.15; families paying privately usually settle somewhere in that range. Fair Oaks' median household income is $116,975 in the ACS, but 38.7% of households draw Social Security, so many budgets run on fixed income. If your parent is on Medi-Cal, call the county IHSS line, (916) 874-9471, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., before committing to private pay. Personal attendants are owed overtime after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
