How to find an in-home caregiver in El Dorado County

Where you live in the county decides who can realistically come to you. On the western slope, caregivers are spread along Highway 50, and plenty of those who answer a posting in El Dorado Hills or Cameron Park will live in Folsom, Rancho Cordova or elsewhere in Sacramento County; above Placerville, toward Pollock Pines, Camino or the Georgetown Divide, the pool thins and a caregiver may face a long drive each way. In the Lake Tahoe basin the market is separate again, drawn from South Lake Tahoe and Meyers. Say in your posting which community you are in and whether there are steep driveways, snow chains or a gate code to deal with.

For many households the private caregiver is one piece of the arrangement. The ACS 2020–2024 count shows 9,853 county householders aged 65 or over living alone, and the county's Area Agency on Aging runs adult day care, respite through its Family Caregiver Support Program, senior meals and Dial-A-Ride. Most families hire for the gaps those services leave: mornings, weekends, nights after a hospital stay. Applications from nearby caregivers appear above as they come in.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in El Dorado County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in El Dorado County

Three things can be checked independently. A Home Care Aide Registry listing means the caregiver passed a CDSS background clearance (agency aides must hold one; for independents it is voluntary). IHSS enrollment through the El Dorado County Public Authority involves Live Scan fingerprints and the state orientation, and its registry adds reference checks. A CDPH nurse assistant certificate can be looked up by number. After that, meet candidates in the house with your parent taking part, phone two references who saw the person work, run a consumer background check with written consent if you want one, and book a paid trial day before any long-term arrangement. We do not screen or background-check anyone on CaregiverConnect; the Verified badge reflects an uploaded document and nothing more.

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in El Dorado County: hourly rates and schedules

Common postings are weekday mornings for bathing, breakfast and medications; short afternoon visits for meals and company; transport days for appointments in Placerville, Folsom or Sacramento; overnight or 24-hour cover after a hospital discharge; and weekend respite for an adult child who does the rest of the week. Tahoe families add winter check-ins when roads keep relatives away.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Two published numbers set the bottom of the range, the $16.50 metro median for aides and the $17.40 county IHSS wage; an experienced caregiver hired privately will usually ask more, and the $40 statewide agency median shows what you save by hiring directly. Budget for mileage in a county this spread out. A full day at The Club adult day program costs $105.88 in FY 2026–2027, with discounts for frequent attendance, which can make a split week cheaper. California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights makes you liable for overtime pay once a shift tops nine hours, or a week tops 45.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
