How to find an in-home caregiver in American Canyon

Few older people in American Canyon live by themselves. The ACS 2020–2024 figures show a person 65 or older in 2,010 of the city's 5,988 households, about one home in three, while only around 261 seniors live alone. Of residents 65 and over, 43.6% report a disability. Use your post to name the hours when your parent would otherwise be alone, and what has to get done in them: getting up and dressed, meals, pills, a walk, or a ride to the doctor.

Many households here speak more than one language. The survey shows 43.3% of people five and up speaking a non-English language at home, with Spanish the most common single language, and a quarter of residents (25.1%) are Filipino. If your father is most comfortable in Tagalog or Spanish, say so and ask for it. The profiles further down are ordered by how close each caregiver is to 94503, and new ones are added as people sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in American Canyon

Several credentials are checkable. Three licensed home care organizations have American Canyon addresses, and the state requires every aide they place to be on the CDSS Home Care Aide Registry; a caregiver you hire directly may have one too, but it is not required. A Napa County IHSS provider has completed state online enrollment, an in-person orientation with original ID and Live Scan fingerprints, and registry providers have also trained with the Public Authority. CNAs are certified by CDPH. Beyond paperwork, phone two former clients or employers, let your parent take part in the interview, and schedule a paid tryout shift when a relative is home. CaregiverConnect does no background screening. If you decide on a records check, the applicant must agree to it in writing, and your family pays for and orders it.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which county do you live in, and what time would you leave home to reach Broadway by 8 a.m.?
  • Could you bring my father to the Active Adult Center on Elliott Drive and collect him at 2?
  • Have you used ACT or Vine Route 11 with a client who no longer drives?
  • Is your Tagalog or Spanish strong enough to keep my mother company all day?
  • Are you enrolled as a Napa County IHSS provider, or only with an agency?
  • If my mother came home from Kaiser or Sutter in Vallejo, what would the first week of care look like with you?
  • My father sometimes skips meals and water. How would you handle a day like that?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With no local wage law recorded for American Canyon by UC Berkeley's Labor Center, a caregiver on your family's payroll must get at least the state's $16.90. BLS reported a $16.50 median and a $19.48 mean for aides in Napa County in May 2025, before that rate took effect. Napa County IHSS pays $20.90 an hour, and CareScout's 2025 survey gives $40 as the state's median agency rate for non-medical care. A direct hire generally costs more than the IHSS rate and less than an agency, rising for dementia care or lifting. Overtime for a personal attendant begins after the ninth hour of a day or the 45th of a week. Napa County describes IHSS as a Medi-Cal program for low-income people who are aged, blind or disabled and at risk of out-of-home placement; Napa County takes applications by phone on 707-253-6272, weekdays 8 to 5, and a health care certification form signed by a licensed professional is part of the process.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
