How to find an in-home caregiver in Napa County

Where your relative lives in the valley decides how wide a net you need. The bulk of the county's population is in the city of Napa, 77,803 of 136,374 residents (DOF E-1, 2026), with American Canyon next at the south end. The towns with the oldest populations are farther north: in the 2020–2024 ACS, half of Yountville's residents and a third of St. Helena's had passed 65. A post for a Calistoga address therefore asks someone to drive the length of the valley, so offer mileage, a longer shift, or both.

Language matters across the county. More than a third of residents five and older (34.2%) use a language besides English at home, Spanish for 26.8%; in Calistoga that share is 42.9%. Say in the post which language your parent relaxes into. Profiles on this page are ranked by how close each caregiver lives to the code typed in, and more appear as people join; the ZIP code to enter is your relative's.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Napa County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Napa County

Begin with what you can check. A Napa County IHSS provider has enrolled through the state site, attended an in-person orientation with original identity documents and submitted Live Scan fingerprints; a registry provider has also signed a registry agreement and trained with Public Authority staff. Agency-employed aides have to be on the state's aide registry; independents may sign up but need not. Nursing assistants carry CDPH certification. Then phone a pair of previous employers, have your relative join the conversation, and book a single paid trial shift before settling the weekly plan. No one at CaregiverConnect screens or verifies applicants; should you want a background report, you arrange it, with the applicant's signed permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How far is your home from my mother's place in St. Helena or Calistoga?
  • Have you helped clients home from Queen of the Valley or Adventist Health St. Helena?
  • Has Napa County enrolled you as an IHSS provider, and did you complete registry training on Imperial Way?
  • My father speaks mostly Spanish. Can you hold a full conversation with him?
  • Would you go with him on VineGo, or use your own car and bill mileage?
  • How have you handled a client with early memory loss who tries to leave the house?
  • Can you cover a weekend so I can rest, and what would you charge?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

For a Napa Valley rate, start from these markers. California's $16.90 is the legal floor; UC Berkeley's Labor Center records no Napa County city with a local rate above it. Federal survey data for May 2025 show Napa-area aides at a $16.50 median wage, with the average at $19.48; the IHSS rate is $20.90, and CareScout puts agency non-medical care in California at a $40 median. A direct hire tends to land between the program rate and the agency figure, and drives up valley push the rate up. For a Medi-Cal member who is elderly, blind or disabled, call IHSS at 707-253-3818 first: approved hours are paid by the program. Personal attendants qualify for overtime pay after nine hours in one day or forty-five in one week, per the state labor department.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Napa County: frequently asked questions

In Napa County, who sets my parent's IHSS hours?

The county IHSS program assesses the need and approves hours, but your parent, not the county, is the employer: they choose, train and schedule the provider and approve timesheets. Call 707-253-3818 to start.

Can the county give us names of IHSS caregivers?

Yes. The Public Authority keeps a registry of providers who have done extra training and agreed to be referred. Once your relative is approved for IHSS, ask the Public Authority on 707-259-8359 for referrals.

Is there daytime care for a parent with dementia?

Adult Day Health Napa Valley on South Jefferson Street takes adults with early memory loss, fall risk or a tendency to wander. Call 707-258-9087 to ask about eligibility and cost.

Will a caregiver drive up to Calistoga?

Some will. Post with the Calistoga ZIP code, offer mileage, and consider fewer but longer shifts; that makes the trip from Napa worthwhile for someone on an hourly rate.

Who screens the valley caregivers listed here?

You do. CaregiverConnect runs no screening, so phoning references and ordering any check is your job. Posting is free; a $24.99 monthly Family Premium plan opens messaging and hire confirmation.

Where can my mother get free rides to the doctor?

Molly's Angels gives free volunteer rides to medical appointments for older adults who can walk, on (707) 224-8971. Should her disability make Vine buses impossible, VineGo enrollment is the route.
