Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Sutter County
Sutter County has two incorporated cities, and the county itself says the rest of its residents live in places such as Tierra Buena, Meridian, Rio Oso, Trowbridge, Sutter, Pleasant Grove, Nicolaus, East Nicolaus, Riego, Robbins and Tudor, or out on farmland. The county describes itself as one of the most intensively farmed in California, with more than 77% of its acreage classed as important farmland. For a caregiver that means two very different kinds of work. In Yuba City, clients live a few minutes apart and you can fit two short visits into a morning. Around Sutter, Meridian or Robbins, driving eats into the day, so longer shifts suit rural clients better.
Plan on a car. In ACS 2020–2024, 75.5% of county workers drove alone and only 0.6% used public transportation; the mean commute was 27.1 minutes. Your profile should name the towns you cover and say if Marysville or Sacramento medical trips are possible for you. Language is the other thing to put near the top. Among residents aged five and up, 20.0% use Spanish at home and 14.1% use another Indo-European language, the census group that includes Punjabi and Hindi. The county notes a substantial East Indian population, and 10.9% of residents report Asian Indian ancestry.

Caregiver pay in Sutter County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Yuba City, CA metro (Sutter and Yuba counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, Yuba City, CA metro (Sutter and Yuba counties) | $16.50 median ($16.89 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 3,120 jobs; concentration 2.21× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Sutter County | $17.90 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The BLS counted 3,120 people working as home health or personal care aides across the two-county Yuba City metro in May 2025, with pay at a $16.89 mean and $16.50 at the midpoint. A location quotient of 2.21 means these jobs make up more than twice the national share of local employment. Sutter County IHSS providers earn $17.90 from January 1, 2026. Across the Feather River the Yuba County rate is $18.78, and the Sacramento County rate is $19.15, which matters only if your client lives in those counties: IHSS pays by the county where the recipient lives. UC Berkeley's Labor Center lists no wage ordinance for Yuba City or Live Oak, leaving the $16.90 state rate in force countywide. Families who employ you directly must also pay time-and-a-half once a shift runs beyond nine hours or the week tops 45 (the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights).
How to enroll as a provider in Sutter County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Sutter County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Sutter County
Working directly for a family in non-medical care needs no state license; the state's $35 Home Care Aide Registry binds agency employees, while for an independent like you it is a choice. IHSS work runs through two county offices in Yuba City. Intake for recipients is at 1445 Veterans Memorial Circle, (530) 822-5990. The IHSS Public Authority, at 539 Garden Highway, Suite B, (530) 822-7619, enrolls providers and keeps the registry. You can only enroll after your client has been approved and has called the Public Authority with your start date. The steps are online enrollment videos and forms, a Live Scan fingerprint check (about $57, paid by you), then an appointment where you show a photo ID plus the original, not a copy, of your Social Security card. Nursing facilities hire CDPH-certified nursing assistants. California law also makes paid caregivers mandated reporters of suspected elder abuse. - Sutter County IHSS Public Authority registryTo be listed for new clients, phone (530) 822-7619 and ask for an application. You must already be an enrolled IHSS provider, which means an enrollment form, a background check, orientation and a signed provider agreement. The office takes contact by phone, email (IHSS@sutter.gov) and web rather than walk-ins.
- IHSS provider enrollment, step by stepThe county's enrollment page explains the online system, the Live Scan form, what to bring to the appointment (vehicle insurance too if you will drive the client), and the four to five week wait before your first timesheets. Timesheets are then filed through the state Electronic Services Portal.
- Yuba College nursing programs, MarysvilleThe campus at 2088 North Beale Road runs an associate degree program for registered nurses and an LVN-to-RN career mobility route that requires a TEAS score of 70 or higher and the college's own NURS 12C bridge course. The college pages list no nurse assistant course, so check CDPH for approved CNA programs.

Inpatient care is thin inside the county. The state facility list (data date September 16, 2026) shows one general hospital, Sutter Surgical Hospital North Valley on Plumas Boulevard with 14 beds, and four skilled nursing facilities: The Fountains (145 beds) and Bridgeview Post Acute (130) in Yuba City, Yuba City Post Acute (59), and River Valley Care Center (99) in Live Oak. The area's full-service hospital, Adventist Health and Rideout (221 beds), is in Marysville in Yuba County. That makes home care and post-discharge help a large part of the local work. For the county seat, see the Yuba City page; neighboring markets are on the Yuba County and Placer County pages.

Caregiver jobs in Sutter County: frequently asked questions
What is the Sutter County IHSS pay rate?
$17.90 an hour, the figure CDSS lists for the county from January 1, 2026. The rate follows the client's county, so a provider living in Yuba City who cares for someone in Marysville is paid the Yuba County rate of $18.78.
What is the IHSS Sutter County phone number?
Providers call the Public Authority on (530) 822-7619 for enrollment, the registry, payroll and timesheets. People applying for services call IHSS Intake on (530) 822-5990.
Where is the Sutter County IHSS office?
There are two Yuba City addresses. Provider enrollment and the registry operate from Garden Highway (number 539, Suite B); recipient intake and Adult Protective Services share 1445 Veterans Memorial Circle.
Do I need a new background check if I had one for another job?
Yes. The county FAQ says every IHSS independent provider must complete a background check on the forms the Public Authority supplies, even with a recent check elsewhere. You enroll once, however many IHSS clients you later take on.
Are there private caregiver jobs outside Yuba City?
Yes. Families in Live Oak and the rural communities post here too; set a wider travel radius in your profile and say how far you will drive, since bus service outside the two cities is limited.
Where do Sutter County families post requests?
On the Sutter County family page or the Yuba City page. Requests from both appear in the list above, and caregivers apply for free with no commission taken from pay.
