Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Butte County

Think of the county as three working zones. The valley side is Chico, with 108,113 residents in January 2026, Enloe Health and the Enloe Rehabilitation Center. The south and east side is Oroville, the county seat, where the county government, the IHSS Public Authority and the main Butte College campus sit, plus Thermalito, Palermo and the Gridley and Biggs farm belt along Highway 99. The Ridge is Paradise and Magalia, where homes are still being rebuilt after the 2018 Camp Fire. A caregiver living in Chico can reach Oroville in a reasonable commute, but a client in upper Magalia or in rural Durham is a different trip, so say in your profile which of these zones you will cover and whether you drive.

Driving matters more here than in a metro area. The ACS 2020–2024 puts the average Butte County commute at 21.0 minutes, and only 0.6% of workers ride public transportation. Spanish is spoken at home by 10.8% of residents five and older. The county also has one of California's larger Hmong communities: ACS table B02015 counts 5,055 Hmong residents (margin of error 616) among 11,629 residents who are Asian alone. If you speak Hmong or Spanish, put that in your first line.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Butte County

Requests across the county tend to fall into four groups: daytime personal care and housekeeping for an older adult living alone; rides from Ridge or Oroville addresses to appointments in Chico; overnight or weekend cover once a patient leaves Enloe or Oroville Hospital; and respite so a spouse can rest. People new to the work usually start with companionship, meals and errands, then add hands-on care once they have earned a CNA certificate.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Butte County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Chico, CA metro (Butte County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Chico, CA metro (Butte County)$16.50 median ($17.11 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 5,940 jobs; concentration 2.74× national
IHSS provider wage, Butte County$17.90CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The Chico metro is the whole of Butte County, so these BLS figures describe the county itself. Its May 2025 count was 5,940 home health and personal care aides, paid a $16.50 median and $17.11 on average, and a location quotient of 2.74 means this work makes up nearly three times the share of local jobs that it does nationally. IHSS pays county providers $17.90 from January 1, 2026, the same rate Sutter County pays and 88 cents under Yuba County's $18.78, worth knowing before you accept a client across the county line. None of the county's five cities has its own wage floor in the UC Berkeley Labor Center's ordinance list, so California's $16.90 is the floor in Chico, Oroville, Paradise, Gridley, Biggs and the unincorporated areas. Rent is moderate by state standards: the county median gross rent is $1,414 (ACS 2020–2024).

How to enroll as a provider in Butte County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Butte County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Butte County

You need no state license to work for a Butte County household directly in non-medical care. A $35 Home Care Aide Registry listing is required solely of aides on a licensed agency's staff. For IHSS work, the Butte County In-Home Supportive Services Public Authority at 78 Table Mountain Blvd, Oroville, runs a five-step enrollment: an online account opened once a recipient has chosen you or your registry application is approved, the online orientation films, e-signatures on forms SOC 426 and SOC 846, a Live Scan fingerprint check on the Butte County form, and an in-person appointment with your original photo ID and Social Security card. The recipient then designates you on a SOC 426A. The Public Authority toll-free line is (855) 398-8899. Hospital and nursing-facility jobs go to nursing assistants certified by CDPH. Ask the Public Authority for a registry application at 530-552-6163 or by email to DESSPublicAuthority@buttecounty.ca.gov. Once approved you complete the same online enrollment, fingerprinting and in-person appointment as any other provider.

Are there caregiver jobs on the Ridge in Paradise and Magalia?
