Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Shasta County

Three cities hold most of the work. The Department of Finance counted 181,934 county residents on January 1, 2026: 94,294 in Redding, 11,050 in Anderson and 10,195 in Shasta Lake, which leaves 66,395 people in unincorporated places such as Cottonwood, Palo Cedro, Bella Vista, Millville, Happy Valley, Burney and Fall River Mills. A request from a Redding ZIP code is usually a short drive for anyone living in the valley. A request from Burney or McArthur is a different job: an hour or more each way on Highway 299, so families there tend to want fewer, longer shifts or a live-in arrangement. Say plainly in your profile which of these areas you will cover and whether mountain roads in winter are realistic for you.

Almost everyone here drives. In ACS 2020–2024, 76.9% of county workers commuted alone by car and 0.5% used public transportation, with a mean trip of 19.8 minutes. A reliable vehicle and a clean license are worth stating near the top of your profile, because many private requests include errands and rides to Redding appointments. Language is a smaller factor than in the Central Valley: just 7.8% of county residents five or older speak something besides English at home, Spanish being the most common at 4.0%, so Spanish is a useful extra rather than a requirement.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Shasta County

The county's IHSS page names the everyday tasks the program covers: cooking, cleaning, bathing, grooming, dressing and feeding. On top of that, private households ask for companionship for a parent who lives alone, transport, overnight cover after a hospital stay and supervision for memory loss. For a first job without experience, look for errands, meal preparation and companion visits, then add personal care once you have trained.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Shasta County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Redding, CA metro (Shasta County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Redding, CA metro (Shasta County)$16.50 median ($16.98 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 5,500 jobs; concentration 2.78× national
IHSS provider wage, Shasta County$18.50CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The Redding metro is the whole of Shasta County, and in May 2025 it counted 5,500 workers in the home health and personal care aide occupation; half earned under $16.50 an hour and the average was $16.98. Its location quotient of 2.78 means the occupation is almost three times as concentrated in local employment as in the country overall. The county IHSS rate of $18.50 has applied since January 1, 2026, which is $1.60 above the $16.90 state minimum and $2.00 above the metro median. The UC Berkeley Labor Center's list of city and county wage ordinances includes no Shasta County jurisdiction, so the state rate governs everywhere from Shasta Lake to Anderson. When a private family offers less than the IHSS rate, it is reasonable to point to it.

How to enroll as a provider in Shasta County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Shasta County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Shasta County

No state license is needed when a Shasta County family pays you directly for non-medical help. Registration on the Home Care Aide Registry ($35, renewed every two years) matters only if a licensed agency hires you. To be paid through IHSS, Shasta County asks you to book a provider orientation by calling (530) 225-5507; it runs every Monday for about two hours, doors close at the start time, and you must carry two documents, a Social Security card plus photo identification, both showing an identical name. You then have 90 days to clear the background check, sign the rights and responsibilities agreement and return a 426-A form for each recipient. The Public Authority adds enrolled providers to its registry. Hospital and nursing home jobs go to CDPH-certified nursing assistants. Under state law you must report any suspected abuse of an older or dependent adult. Detail: IHSS in Shasta County and California caregiver rules.

The area

Shasta County in numbers

The county is older than California overall. ACS 2020–2024 puts 21.5% of residents at 65 or over (39,009 people), 2.4% at 85 or over, and the median age at 41.7. In 10,595 households the only occupant is 65 or older, and 18.1% of the civilian population reports a disability. Veterans are 8.4% of adults. Median gross rent is $1,317, and rent takes 30% or more of income in 53.4% of renting households, which is worth weighing when you set your rate.

Discharge planning drives much short-notice work. HCAI lists Mercy Medical Center Redding (Rosaline Avenue, 266 licensed beds), Shasta Regional Medical Center (Butte Street, 226), and on Eureka Way the 82-bed Vibra Hospital of Northern California and 10-bed Patients' Hospital of Redding. In the intermountain area, Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills is licensed for 115 beds. For pay and transit inside the largest city, see the Redding page; the neighboring market to the south is on the Butte County page.
