Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Humboldt County

Almost every paid care job in this county sits somewhere along Highway 101 between Trinidad and Scotia. That stretch holds the county seat, three of its four hospitals, its skilled nursing homes and the home health agencies, and it is also the area that the senior day programs, PACE and volunteer drivers describe as their service zone. Outside it the work is scattered: the Garberville and Redway area in the south, and Hoopa and Willow Creek up Highway 299. If you live in one of those places, say so in your profile; a family there will value a caregiver who does not have to drive in from Eureka.

Plan the radius you set around the roads you actually use. In the ACS 2020–2024, 67.9% of working residents drove alone to work and just 1.0% rode public transportation, with a mean one-way trip of 19 minutes. A car is close to essential for live-out work beyond the bay towns. Put your town, your limits and whether you will drive clients to appointments in the first lines of the profile. The profile guide walks through each section.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Humboldt County

The county IHSS office lists the kinds of help it pays for: cleaning, cooking and errands; grooming, bathing and toileting; rides to medical services; and protective supervision for people who cannot be left alone. Private households post the same tasks, plus company for someone living alone and short-term help after a stay at St. Joseph, Mad River or Redwood Memorial. Pay

Caregiver pay in Humboldt County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino counties)$16.74 median ($17.16 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 10,140 jobs; concentration 3.34× national
IHSS provider wage, Humboldt County$18.40CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

BLS does not publish a Humboldt-only figure. The county falls inside its North Coast nonmetropolitan area, which also takes in Del Norte, Lake and Mendocino counties; there, 10,140 home health and personal care aides earned a $16.74 median and a $17.16 mean in May 2025. A location quotient of 3.34 means aide jobs make up more than three times the national share of local employment. IHSS pays $18.40, and the county explains why: its labor contract with SEIU sets the provider wage at $1.50 above the minimum. UC Berkeley's Labor Center lists no local wage ordinance anywhere in Humboldt, leaving the state's $16.90 in force in Eureka, Arcata, Fortuna and everywhere else. Private households that employ you must also follow the state's domestic worker overtime rule (more than nine hours daily or 45 weekly).

How to enroll as a provider in Humboldt County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Humboldt County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Humboldt County

Working straight for a household on non-medical tasks requires no state license. Registration on the $35 state Home Care Aide Registry becomes mandatory only once a licensed home care organization employs you; the state's May 2025 file listed three such organizations in the county, all based in Eureka. IHSS is run by the Department of Health & Human Services from 808 E St. in Eureka (707-476-2100 or 866-527-8614). New providers register online in BOUNDS, watch the training videos, book an in-person orientation and bring an unexpired photo ID and Social Security card, and complete a Live Scan fingerprint check. You have 90 days from registration to finish. Joining the Public Authority's Caregiver Registry is optional. Hospitals and the county's skilled nursing homes hire CDPH-certified nursing assistants.
