Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Arcata
Students dominate Arcata's numbers, but its older residents still need help at home. Half of Arcata residents are younger than 28.1 years (ACS 2020–2024), and nearly three in four people enrolled in any school here (72.6%) attend college or graduate school. Yet 2,643 residents are 65 or older, 26.9% of them report a disability, and 836 households are an older person living alone. For a student or recent graduate, that mix can work: a household that needs a few dependable hours a week can be a good fit for a class schedule, and continuity matters to an older client. Be clear in your profile about your class schedule, your summer plans and how long you expect to stay in the area. Openings from Arcata households are listed above once families post them.
Think about getting around. In Arcata, 10.6% of workers walk to work and 4.6% use other means such as a bicycle, against 58.6% who drive alone. If you do not have a car, say so and say which neighborhoods you can reach on foot, by bike or on the Arcata and Mad River Transit System; many clients in town are within that range, but a family in the hills or out toward Blue Lake may need someone who drives. Our profile guide covers what else to include.

Caregiver pay in Arcata: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Humboldt County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Humboldt County) | $16.74 median ($17.16 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 10,140 jobs; concentration 3.34× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Humboldt County | $18.40 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
No Arcata minimum wage appears in UC Berkeley's inventory of local ordinances; California's $16.90 is therefore the minimum for a private employer here. IHSS providers are paid the Humboldt County wage of $18.40, set at $1.50 above the minimum under the county's SEIU contract, and BLS reports a $16.74 median for aides in the four-county North Coast nonmetro area. For comparison, the ACS reports median annual earnings of $22,146 for Arcata workers, a figure that includes part-time work. Rent is the pressure point, with a $1,327 median and 60.0% of renter households paying 30% or more of income. If a family asks you to work more than nine hours in a day or 45 in a week, overtime applies.
How to enroll as a provider in Humboldt County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Humboldt County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Arcata
Private, non-medical caregiving for an Arcata family requires no state license. You need the $35 state Home Care Aide Registry listing only when a licensed home care organization puts you on its payroll, and the state's May 2025 file listed none based in Arcata; the three in the county were in Eureka. To be paid through IHSS, you enroll with Humboldt County at 808 E St. in Eureka: an online BOUNDS registration, training videos, an in-person orientation with original ID and Social Security card, and a Live Scan fingerprint appointment booked in the portal. Students under 18 cannot join the Caregiver Registry. See the Humboldt County IHSS guide and our California requirements guide.
