How to find an in-home caregiver in Arcata
College students make up much of Arcata (ACS 2020–2024 counts 5,328 residents in college or graduate school), so applicants to a post here may include students from Cal Poly Humboldt's nursing program as well as experienced caregivers from Arcata, McKinleyville or across the bay in Eureka. Students can be a good fit for set, part-time hours, but ask about exams, school breaks and summer plans before you rely on one person for every shift. If you need year-round cover, say so in the post and consider two caregivers who share the week.
Give caregivers the details that matter in this town. Is the house walkable from a bus stop, or up in the hills where a car is needed? Is parking available? Does your parent need help on stairs? The ACS 2020–2024 counts 836 Arcata households in which someone 65 or older lives alone, and more than a quarter (26.9%) of older residents report a disability, so say plainly whether the job includes bathing, transfers or night checks. Search with 95521, Arcata's ZIP code, and the profiles underneath begin with the nearest caregivers; more appear as people sign up.

Evaluating caregivers in Arcata
Ask each applicant what they can show you. If they work for IHSS in Humboldt County, they have passed a Live Scan fingerprint check and attended orientation with original ID; if they come through a licensed agency, they must be on the state Home Care Aide Registry. A student's enrollment does not prove caregiving skill, so ask for the names of families or facilities they have worked for and call them. Have your parent sit in, be candid about the hardest part of the job, and book a paid half-day to see how it goes. CaregiverConnect does not screen applicants or run background checks; a record check is possible only if you arrange it, and only with the applicant's signature.

| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, North Coast nonmetropolitan area (includes Humboldt County) | $16.74 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Humboldt County | $18.40 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Arcata has no local minimum wage on UC Berkeley's list, so California's $16.90 is the least you can pay a caregiver you employ. For context, the May 2025 median for aides across the North Coast nonmetro area was $16.74, Humboldt County IHSS pays $18.40, and agencies statewide bill a $40 median hourly rate per CareScout. Rent is high relative to local incomes (the Arcata median is $1,327, and 60.0% of renters pay 30% or more of income), so matching the IHSS rate can help a private offer stand out. Overtime starts after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. Medi-Cal members may qualify for county-paid IHSS hours, so ring 707-476-2100 before settling a private budget.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
