How to find an in-home caregiver in Rio Dell

Rio Dell has 3,224 residents by the state's 2026 count, and no licensed home care agency, elder care home or nursing home appears at a Rio Dell address in state records. That is why most families here hire one person directly. Applicants may live in town, in Scotia or Fortuna, or farther north around the bay, so say where the house is, which days and hours you need, whether the job includes driving, and the hourly rate. A caregiver weighing a trip from Eureka will want to know all of that before replying.

Transport shapes the job more than in the bay cities. The Dial-a-Ride service area HTA lists covers Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville and several bay communities but not Rio Dell, and ACS 2020–2024 found 7.0% of Rio Dell households without a vehicle. If your parent no longer drives, ask for a caregiver with a car, or one who will ride the Redwood Transit bus from City Hall with them. Profiles below are sorted by distance from the ZIP code you type, and new ones join as caregivers register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Rio Dell

Begin with what an applicant can show you. A Humboldt County IHSS provider has registered with the county, attended orientation and passed a Live Scan check. A certified nursing assistant holds a CDPH certificate you can look up. Agencies may send out only aides who are on the state Home Care Aide Registry, while for an independent caregiver that listing is optional. Ask for two references from recent families and call them, let your parent meet the finalists, and pay for one trial shift while a relative is in the house. CaregiverConnect does not check anyone's background, license or references; a background report is something your family can order with the caregiver's signed consent.

  • Could you drive Dad to appointments in Fortuna or Eureka, or ride the bus from City Hall with him?
  • Would you pick up his Friday meal package at the fire hall on Center Street?
  • Are you an enrolled Humboldt County IHSS provider, or willing to enroll if he qualifies?
  • Have you cared for someone attending an adult day health or PACE program?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Rio Dell has no wage ordinance in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory, so a family that employs a caregiver directly pays at least the state's $16.90. For context, BLS reports a $16.74 median for aides across the North Coast area in May 2025, Humboldt County IHSS pays $18.40, and CareScout's 2025 median for agency care in California is $40 an hour. Overtime is due to a personal attendant after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. Rio Dell's median household income in ACS is $42,753, so check IHSS first: the county requires applicants to be 65 or older, blind or disabled and receiving Medi-Cal, and you can ask about eligibility on 707-476-2100.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
