How to find an in-home caregiver in Eureka

Hiring a caregiver privately in Eureka usually means one person or a small rotation who comes to the house for set hours, paid by you. Arcata and McKinleyville are a short drive across the bay, so a Eureka request can draw applicants from those towns as well as from the city and Humboldt Hill. Put the neighborhood or ZIP code (95501 or 95503) in the first line of the post, list the hours, and say whether the caregiver must drive. More than one in ten Eureka households (11.7%) has no car in the ACS 2020–2024, and an older parent who no longer drives will need rides to St. Joseph, the pharmacy and the senior center.

Mention stairs, pets and smoking too. If English is not your relative's first language, say which one; 13.7% of Eureka residents aged five or more speak another language at home, Spanish being the most common. The caregiver list under this section starts with whoever lives closest to the ZIP code in your search and fills in further as people register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Eureka

Start with paperwork you can check. A current Humboldt County IHSS provider has completed state enrollment: online registration, an orientation at 808 E St. where ID documents are checked, and fingerprinting by the state Department of Justice. Anyone placed by a licensed home care agency has to be listed on the state Home Care Aide Registry. Certified nursing assistants are listed with CDPH, and the evening course at Eureka Adult School is the local route to that certificate. Then do your own checking: phone two references who employed the person, sit in on the interview with your parent, and pay for a trial shift. CaregiverConnect does not verify identities or run background checks; if you want one, ask the applicant to agree to a screening in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How far do you live from us, and have you worked with clients in Eureka before?
  • Have you helped someone home from St. Joseph or from a rehab stay at a Eureka nursing home?
  • Can you get Mom to the Heritage Café on California Street for lunch on weekdays?
  • Are you enrolled as a Humboldt County IHSS provider, and could you switch to IHSS hours later?
  • Have you used a gait belt or helped with transfers from a wheelchair?
  • What would you do if Dad fell and refused to let you call 911?
  • Will you keep a written log of medications and meals for our family?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Eureka: hourly rates and schedules

Eureka requests tend to fall into three patterns: short daily visits of two to four hours for bathing, meals and medication reminders; weekday blocks around adult day health at the senior resource center; and overnight or weekend cover so a spouse or adult child can rest. After a hospital discharge, plan for more hours at first and fewer once your relative is steadier.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Eureka has no city minimum wage, so a private caregiver must earn at least the state's $16.90. Aides in the North Coast nonmetro area earned a $16.74 median in May 2025, Humboldt County IHSS pays $18.40, and a California agency charges a median $40 an hour in CareScout's 2025 survey. A domestic employee working beyond nine hours on a given day, or 45 over the week, is owed time-and-a-half. If your parent is on Medi-Cal, ask the county about IHSS first (707-476-2100); the hours it authorizes can be paid to the caregiver you choose, including a relative.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
